I voted too @giajones in your poll. Well, to respond to your poll on what is Yule? This reminds us of the Christmas that the Christians are celebrating especially on December 25, Christmas Day. According to history, Yule or Yuletide is a Germanic peoples festival that paved the way to Christmas Festival or celebration.

Since Christmas season is in Winter, the inhabitants of those historic Germanic peoples gathered in a circle, lighted a fire by using a big log. Thus Yule log came in for that purpose of giving them heat and warmth for their body to resist the cold of the night while they celebrate Christmas.
