Most people think of nature as a dumping ground, a disposal for their garbage. Rivers and lakes are used to dump waste and other products in, killing rare animal species in the process.

It is rare to see people simply living off the land, harvesting their own freshly grown vegetables or hunting for survival. It has become so easy to just go to a supermarket and by whatever is required for the home, forgetting that most of the products are imported from other countries. In some rural areas, especially here in South Africa where I am based, it is not uncommon to see a plot of Corn or Cabbage beside the road.

Most people who live in such areas are unable to afford the prices of supermarkets, and have to make do with their own crops. Further in to Africa, in areas such as Botswana, living off the land is the only way most of the rural areas survive. Cattle roam the little roads between villages, some not returning home because they are caught by predators or hit by passing cars.

Christianity says that humanity has domination over nature, but this is not so. Nature could turn on us at any time, and we would of course be swept away like so much driftwood. If we wish to leave anything of this planet intact, it is imperative that we show a deeper respect for nature. The way the world economy is going, it might be required that we start growing our own food and grinding our own flower..
