For children who are diagnosed with ADHD, it is best to avoid medications as a quick fix. Medication should be used as a last resort in most cases. There are other interventions which can be considered and implemented prior to deciding to start a medication. For instance, we should ask whether the problem behavior is causing major distress or is it simply annoying? Is this behavior seen in all settings (like both at home and at school)? If not, then one must reflect on the differences in the child’s routine and daily structure, and make changes where necessary. Then finally, these modifications would need to be tried in good earnest in every setting, and not simply for a few days. If none of these strategies work, then medication could be considered.

I'm also into the concept of taking prescribed medication as a last option to take. My prioty of treatment is preventive type. Kids ADHD should be given Ritalin to control hyperactivity, but why control this when they can put it into good used. Drain out their energy by encouraging them to participate in sports. Thru this, all of their energy will be channeled out properly and efficiently. Its a win -win situation.
