As a fellow athiest, I do sometimes find it frustrating not to have one (or more) divine being(s) to depend on. On the long run, however, I find it keeps me grounded to reality, so to speak. Those who choose to believe in a god are essentially making excuses for themselves. I only believe what I see, and that is equally a weakness and strength, but that's just my choice.

I personally identify myself as agnostic, which can vary in meaning a little from person to person. I've always been taught that Agnostics believe that there is or was a divine creator of some sort, but since our inception that creator has had no interference with mankind.

This has always resonated with me. Saying that there is no God whatsoever leaves too many gaps, as the OP states. Agnostics feel that God or a god-like creator made us all and then took a step back and let our civilizations develop on their own.
