I have been homeschooling my sons since they were preschool age (they are now 8 and 10) and I have had so many people look at my husband and I like we are crazy when they find out. I wondered if it's the area where we live, in the rural south, or if most people really think it's a bad or unusual thing.

I love the idea of homeschooling. I don't have kids yet, but when I do I will definitely be doing the same. I've actually mentioned this to family and friends, and they would say, "are you crazy their going to miss out on this and that". Me personally I'm just not too fond of the school system. I don't believe that you are "crazy" I believe that you are smart and doing what works best for you and your children. People tend to attack what they don't know. Your children will appreciate it in the long run.

Thank you for your kind words. I have always felt that homeschooling was the only way to go for us, but when you are constantly questioned and looked at like you have a third eye, it's hard. With a few years under our belts, the comments don't have the effect that they used to. In the beginning I would get really upset because I just wasn't that confident about what I was doing. But it has been an amazing blessing to our family.

Well it looks like you know what you are doing don't let them discourage you. It requires patience and hardwork. I actually would like to see more people try homeschooling. It's an interesting journey or job that I can't wait to experience when my time comes.

I would absolutely consider home schooling. Home schooling is a little more fun than public schooling. The children will enjoy education more as they can study what they are interested in.

As a matter of fact home schooling helps the parents to create strong bonds with their children as they spend more time together. This will help the parents to help their teenage children closely during their adolescence and other trying times.

Think about it, home schooling protects children from peer pressure and other negative influences that would come from schools. Parents get the chance to monitor their behaviour closely and decide on how to punish their children in case they misbehave.

I find it amazing how home schooling is not uptight. Breaks can be taken any time. It would be easy to go on vacations with children and even decide to make them educational. Home schooling is just amazing, I think people should give it a chance and stop criticizing.

Getting education at home is not a crazy idea because some children are less privileged, they don't have money for transport some even leave far from school so I would consider home school.

There are a lot of advantages to home schooling such as a better focus on the subject matter because the student is not distracted by other students, horseplay in class, and all of the tenuous social games that kids can play at younger ages.

Parents have to really be organized and focused as well, as distractions can be a problem in a home schooling situation as well. The schedule can be somewhat more flexible sometimes though because there are only one or two students involved as compared to an entire classroom of 25 or 30 students.

I have heard people say that home schooling doesn't allow for much in the way of socialization for the student, but nowadays there are groups of home schooling parents who have organized physical education, field trips, social events and many other opportunities for students to meet and interact with one another.

I do not oppose homeschooling and parents have reasons why they do it. Homeschooling is great when kids feel they do the fit in school or if they gain more when homeschooled.

I still think going to public schools like all other kids is much better, because it helps kids to interact. The interaction in schools prepares the kids for the outside community when they are all grown up.

But in cases where kids cannot completely learn in school, then homeschooling is ok provided kids are comfortable with their studies and tend to gain more educationally.

Home schooling sounds differently to different people. To a child who is an extrovert, homeschooling will be a nightmare, whereas to a very introverted child, homeschooling is a dream come true.

I personally won't subscribe to the idea of homeschooling because of some obvious reasons.

There isn't much seriousness attached to learning because the child feels he or she is in the same environment where he plays. There is bond to be a lot of distractions, which neither parent nor child (ren) can resist.

Hey, I am a disciplinarian and a very principled parent. There is no room for unseriousness when I'm dealing with my children... Good. But what about socialisation? The school isn't just for learning, but also serves as a point of socialisation. Homeschooling tends to restrict kids to meeting just one or two person constantly. No room to relate with friends or other kids in the neighbourhood.

I allow my kids interact with others in the evening when they return from school... Good. What about the fact that we are supposed to be free thinkers? Home schooling is good when you plan to indoctrinate your kids into a particular way of life. But if you believe humans are supposed to be allowed to make free decisions without coercion, then you have to allow those kids meet with other kids in a formal school setting where there are arguments and counterarguments on individual opinions, and the individual ends up making decisions based on his own personal beliefs and not because mum or dad used to sing the principle into my head everyday.
