A study at New Hampshire Hospital has shown that psychiatric patients could potentially benefit from participating in a yoga therapy program. One hundred thirteen participants who had been admitted for various mental diagnoses participated in the study. They all had significant improvements in negative emotions, according to the surveys. It was shown that all participants were able to benefit. Their gender or diagnosis did not seem to make a difference in the outcome.

The study shows how yoga could possibly be beneficial in inpatient settings as part of a therapy program. More research would be needed to determine whether the positive effects are from the yoga therapy itself or from simply taking a break from the inpatient setting in a more relaxed and social atmosphere.
