I am Serbia, but i learned English from a very young age.I didnt really study a lot, must of my english knowledge comes from watching movies and cartoons. So after a while i started watching movies without subtitles and its easy to understand every single word.So why would I watch a movie with subtitles. What do you think of subtitles , do you watch movies with or without subtitles ?

Subtitles are the worst. One is busy trying to focus and listen in but the subtitles keeps on popping up on the screen. It's so irritating. I actually hate it. You find that even if you can hear clearly what they are saying you just keep reading the subtitles for no apparent reason but then as you are reading the subtitles, something happens which you miss because you were reading the subtitles and then you keep playing and replaying the scenes. So tiring !

Watching with subtitles definitely helps me to understand a film better because even though I understand the language the actors are speaking, some words may still be unintelligible at times. Also, I speak English, so subtitle is must when I'm watching Korean films and other non-English films. However, subtitles oftentimes take away the suspense as well because it reveals some of the words before it is actually said by the actor hence, spoiling some key events ahead of time.

I agree with what says sb-order-g, really a film means much when this subtitles, this is a function, which has many positive aspects especially if it is a person who is learning a language, for example, English, when you see and hear the language makes understanding easier, this is recommended so many teachers, to help students understand better the language tells that the subtitles you see and hear the words, thus becoming better familiar with the language.

In my case of truth to understand the film I have to see the subtitles so be of the same language, I do this to avoid losing me nothing of what is happening in the film, is very made me understand it in this way, for some people becomes it difficult to see the movie with subtitles because it says you lose concentration on the scene in my case does not pass as well, when I see the movie with subtitle can concentrate better, makes more sense to me, but person who does not like anything is given the idea of seeing the movie and subtitles seems exhausting mentally, you prefer to leave it only in the dubbing without seeing subtitles, of course, all this is a matter of taste.

I prefer watching movies with subtitles for that is the way I can understand the flow of the story especially when it is not in english language.

I do watching korean movies so everytime I want to watch korean movies I make sure it has an english subtitles. Even sometimes I was distracted because you need to read the english subtitles while watching it, for me it turns into challenged for me on how my mind and eyes funtion together.

Usually I watch movies with subtitles because I can understand better what the actors are saying, especially if is in a language I don't know. I think that subtitles are helping us because like so we can learn new languages, though is very frustrating when there are subtitles when you know the language.

I am a huge fan of foreign language and culture, so I find myself watching a lot of movies in languages other than English and French. Personally, I choose to watch the movie with subtitles, but I put the subtitles in the language of the movie. For example, if I was going to watch the Spanish film, Abre los Ojos, I would watch it with Spanish subtitles. Personally I have an easier time reading foreign languages than listening to them, so I find the subtitles to be quite helpful. I find that a lot of the time, meaning can be lost in translation, so by keeping the movie in it's original language, I am understanding the movie the way it was meant to be understood.

I am somewhat of a die hard fan of animes, and almost all the anime I watch are in Japanese. So I am pretty good with subtitles. It was exasperating when I started to watch Animes or Chinese and Japanese movies. Actually it is annoying to catch up with subtitles and the movie at the same time, but now I am used to concentrating on both. Not to mention that it may help in learning vocabulary and more or less improves your reading abilities, so technically your spare time would no longer be spare as you are going to be learning something in it as well.

Although it takes remarkable skills to concentrate on a number of things at a time, but once you get hold of it, you can easily get a pick on other languages, at least the basics if not much.

I find subtitles very helpful when I'm watching foreign movies in Korean, Japanese and the like. It helps me understand the lines of the characters and the entire plot of the movie.

For others, they find it distracting since they focus more on reading the subtitles than looking at the characters but for me it is the other way around. I am more focused in watching a movie when it has subtitles.

Having subtitles on movies or series is great especially when the movie is in different language like Mandarin or whatever. Subtitles help us to understand the movie more, sometimes even though I can understand english I still like reading through subtitles because there are lines that I can't hear properly because of the accent or the volume like when the characters are whispering.

By adding subtitles, the movie will be a able to reach more audience who does not understand the language used.

I put on subtitles for movies in a different language. Subtitles in movies that are in English feels very unnecessary to me. I don't need subtitles in a language that I understand very clearly.

I watch both but for the languages I do not understand I prefer those with subtitles so that I get to know what is happening. The viewer gets along well also with a movie ha has subtitles especially if the English used is American.

I have audio processing problems sometime so I usually use subtitles if available, to help me follow the dialogue and story.

I love watching foreign movies and TV series. It was so entertaining and amusing to watch. However, watching foreign movies without subtitles give me a hard time understanding the story of the movie. Subtitles are created to make their movie more comprehensive especially to those who are from foreign country and not that familiar in their language.

I am a Filipino and I love watching Korean movies and Korean Dramas. Subtitles helps me to understand the story and gives me additional enjoyment in my viewing habits.

I watch movie with subtitles, I was just used to watching movies with subtitles because it makes me understand what's being said more especially if the actor speaks something inaudibly. And also since I was just a kid every movies I watched have subtitles so maybe I was just so used of movies with subtitles. I honestly get uncomfortable watching a movie without it. Subtitles brings clarity to the movie and it makes me more comfortable and satisfied.

I've been a language tutor for many years and i always used movies and tv-series with subtitles as a "fun" exercise to make at home,i can assure that all the students learned a lot with this method,no matter what was their motherlanguage or the one that they were learning. It's especially useful to get up and run with conversation and interaction with other people in another language,i've seen with my own eyes a girl succesfully comunicating with her schoolmates using constructs and sentences learned from a The Big Bang Theory episode watched the day before :).

For all of you that cannot focus on both what happens on screen and text below, simply follow on screen and read text only when you don't understand something. In some programs you can set a shortcut key to toggle subtitles so you can show them only when necessary.

Movies are a great ways to be entertained. I'm a sucker for any films so long as the plot appeals to me. I personally watched it all the time, its either done through our television screen or using my laptop in bed. Honestly, I couldn't choose between the two, it seems they come in handy depending on the language used. It's great not to have subtitles when watching Hollywood films using the English language, the action allows me to get in tune to the used of American accent. However, other films such as Korean, Japanese and Chinese are difficult to understand without subtitles, not that most subtitles are all correct, but it gives me a sense of understanding as to what the characters are talking about rather than hearing words that doesn't make any sense to me.

I always watch movies for subtitles, whether they're in English or not. If they're in a different language, I obviously have to have subtitles to understand. But for movies in English, I find that I can read subtitles much faster than the actors and actresses speak them out loud, so I like to play movies sped up 1.5 times with subtitles on (that means I can watch a 3-hour movie in just 2 hours!).

I usually choose to watch movies with subtitles, mainly in case the speaker says something that I don't understand. I find that subtitles generally are very helpful and aren't disruptive of the movie in any way, so there isn't any reason why subtitles would negatively affect my experience viewing a film. This is all my personal opinion though, I do sometimes choose to watch a movie without subtitles, but I find that I've had better viewing experiences with subtitles, rather than without.
