Does music really help you study and collect information? I have read multiple studies that the human brain has a very hard time multi tasking between audio and sight. Let me know what you all think I would love to hear some opinions! Thanks for reading!

I personally cannot study if music is playing in the background. The studies you have read apply true for me, since my brain cannot focus between reading and listening to the music. However, I do have friends who like to listen to music while studying or reading. So to each his own, perhaps?

You will never concentrate. We like listening to music because of the messages they have. Imagine having a book trying to get another message. It is impossible and waste of time meant for study. If you want to study better put the music off first. After studies then get sometime and listen to music.

Music can help you study, and it's easy to have music in the background whilst you study; and also concentrate.
It's widely known that the soundtracks of most video-games are 'designed' so that you concentrate on the game whilst also hearing the music. I've always found that if I listen to OST's from video-games whilst I study, then I get more done.

The only music that helps me study, is classical. It's peaceful, you get in the zone, you feel ready. Like rock music, I will start singing and dancing and won't even study. Researchers showed that classical music helps the brain collect more information.

I agree with fatema. I read somewhere that the same part of the brain that process mathematics, is the same side that processes music. Classical music tends to be soothing, and provides background, so it's not intrusive. On the other hand, music that has lyrics, to me is disturbing, because I am always trying to listen to the words, while I am trying to study. That becomes distracting and competes with my studies.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. Someone understands me. Music distracts me when I study. I can only listen to classical music, it's very soothing. Rap, pop, and all that music that at least has lyrics, doesn't help me study at all. When I'm doing like math homework, or studying for a math test , than that's different. So basically, I can only listen to music with lyrics, when I'm studying math. Music puts everyone in a good mood, and when you study, you have to be relaxed. Music doesn't do that all, it just gets you pumped up.

I cannot concentrate studying with music but, classical yes because they don't have words for us to sing along or to distract us with lyrics. Even if it is not classical like the instrumental I am okay with it as long as there is no words. These kind of music while studying could set us in the mood of peacefulness and concentration, that,s why it is advisable to use it during studying.

I read somewhere that playing music can actually help you study as long as there are no lyrics and the tempo or beat of the song is slow. Otherwise you'd just get distracted and too pumped up instead of being relaxed and focused on what you're doing. If the song has lyrics in it, you'd generally find yourself singing along which can make memorizing difficult if you're studying the human anatomy for example. Likewise, fast and upbeat songs can get you excited and unable to focus on the matter at hand. That is why as fatema has previously mentioned, classical music would be the way to go. The music doesn't have lyrics, has a medium beat, and stimulates your brain.

Personally, I'd rather study in silence as even when I'm playing classical music, I find myself singing to the tune of the song. It depends per person though as I have a friend that plays roaring music when studying and it actually helps him focus. I guess it helps him block out all the distractions around him. I'm not sure, but that's what I think. You just have to find what suits you best and stick with it. Good luck!

Calming Slow Music Turned down , not played to loud while studying could help you finish your studies. Also in my opinion no music at all period can help you focus more ,and get them done faster rather than if music was playing in background, it can somewhat distract you .

Based on my experience, I will not gain a lot if I study while listening to music. Sure, I could study for longer hours with music, I can't memorize or think properly while listening to music. Sometimes, I end up singing to the music
all in all, listening to music while studying is a big NO.;)

In my personal experience, it depends on what type of studying I'm doing. For instance, if I was preparing for an exam by answering questions (such as Calculus or Statistics or even Biology) I am able to listen to music while completing practice problems. And even then, the music I'd be listening to would have to be lyric-less, like Classical or movie soundtracks.
If I am reading or learning new material, then nope! Music becomes too much of a distraction for me, unfortunately.

I think it depends on the subject that you are studying. For me math and science were the toughest subjects to study and prepare for, so I could never have music in the background playing because it would be too much of a distraction. However, if we were talking about English or social studies, then I love having music to listen to because most of the material involved rote memorization so I didn't need to concentrate as hard. I just have a hard time studying continuously in silence so I need something to help break up the monotony and music is perfect for that reason.

I agree with you. For me music was always for listening. Mixing it with reading is being stuck between two worlds. For me either you read or you listen music. I can not be focused if i am doing both.

I can't listen to music while studying. It's a distraction and I find myself listening more than studying. I need peace and quietness, with the tv on in the background. I got to have some type of white noise.

I don't know what is wrong with me!;) but I study with a music in background:) .It's true that you can't focus on studies when you listening to music by your Headphones. So I'm not doing that but sometimes I study while listening to music without Headphones. It build me confidence to study hard and reduce my stress.

Wonderful thing is listening to music while studying helps me to remember things that I'm not been able to remember with regular studying;).This is absolutely true. But I know it's hard to do for some people and above posts explains it. So I say try to study while listening to music. If you think this isn't gonna work out just study the way you like and get to the top!:)

For myself, I find it impossible to do anything but sing or dance when music is on. I can't even sleep when a radio is playing somewhere. Studying is definitely out of the question. I need a silent and serene environment for my mind to focus and actually learn anything. However, I'm just one person and what works for me may not work for everyone. If someone else can study and listen to music, good for them!

I've found that several songs can be played while studying. In my case, fast-tempo songs can come off as distractive, depending on the task you are performing but all in all there are some that can be quite relaxing for study purposes, all I do is looking up "concentration songs" or "music for studying" on youtube and a wide range of choices pop up.

I agree with this post! For me, personally, it really does depend on the type of subject I am studying for. I find that for subjects which are geared more towards mathematical or scientific concepts, I can listen to music and it motivates me to do more work. On the other hand, for subjects like English, which involve creative writing skills, I find music distracts and irritates me. In these instances, I find it very difficult to concentrate.

I understand that classical music is great to listen to for studying as it helps improve efficiency. However, unlike some of the posters here, it isn't motivational enough for me. It's just not my cup of tea.

In my opinion music while studying is a big distraction for me because I need understand what I am listening to because some of the current music out here has lyrics that are not appropriate for any age in my opinion. However, I found that listening to classical music, easy listening, or meditation sounds prior to studying helps me to relax and focus on the subject I am studying. On the other hand my son like to listen to music while he studies and it seems to help him focus a little better which is a good thing. I think if a person wants to listen to music while he or she studies would be okay as long as there are no lyrics to sing or dance to because some people like me will get distracted and start sing along and lose focus on the subject of study. It is my person preference to study in quiet because I love music and if it is one of favorite songs then studying will become secondary and music my primary focus. When I am writing poetry music can be an inspiration so for me it just depend on what I am doing that determines whether or not I listen to music.
