Being an African born in the 70s,canning and other forms of beating was normal for child correction in the traditional way.
So going to school in the 80s corporal punishment was the order of the day in the schools.

Come to look at it, did it really help? I would say yes and no.
Yes in that, those who feared the cane always tried to be on the right side of the law and later turned out to be good citizens.
What of the the ones who were hardened by the beatings?

Some children got used to the beatings such that it didn't help them in any way and they turned out to be worse people.
To be sincere, I believe in talking to children in a friendly and supportive manner so that we can know what is causing them to behave the way they are behaving and seek alternative solutions in helping our children rather than corporal punishment.
    What do you say ?

This was an amazing post and it upset me to see that it had no replies. Much like you I very much believe in talking to children to see what is causing them to act the way they are. On the other hand, I do believe that if a child needs a smack on the bottom, and the parent is the one doing so, then that is completely acceptable. Kids nowadays might actually learn something about respect and the chain of command if they had to worry about getting paddled in schools. However, you have parents that want to believe their child would never behave the way some children do in schools, then the school has to deal with every "Karen" running in to discuss the fact that their precious baby got paddled. I would hate to see how kids nowadays would have handled growing up the way I, along with many other productive members of society, were raised.

I was impressed, this is a topic that people don't talk about anymore. Maybe we should be though.

I also find this an interesting topic as well as very controversial. I personally feel that spankings should be a LAST resort after you have tried everything else. There is a special padded place on the body for that purpose. And by all means, NEVER spank a child when you are ANGRY..

On the other hand, listening so that our children will talk and talking so that they will listen is very important. TEACHING children what is expected of them when they are young should hopefully limit the need for corporal punishment. Let's teach our children to communicate and follow directions early.

I think there is no way possible that a civilized man with the cultural background and civilized mind can find any reason to support this judgement. This has been the main reason why extremism rose in our community. The schools should be place that nurture young minds to Harbour the ideas of tomorrow and the divine light within it.

Corporal punishment or even any other kind of punishment is not justified in any sense. If we want the children to obey us and not do any mistake or repeat them then we have to present a good character in front of them. Kids follow their elders. Punishment can only make them rebel not a good person or an obedient student.
