Are we slowly becoming "brain dead" as we fondle our smart phones for hours on end?

Times are changing I can hardly keep up although we use our smart phones way too much . I feel we also stay connected through them to friends and family we don't see often . As far is interaction with family in the home is very important . I wouldn't text my children good night with a smilely face to the next room over. I think if a healthy balance is there we benefit from technology.

I'm not sure about being 'Brain Dead' but I can confirm that I cannot do most things without them. I use them so much that I have to rely on them to do most things now, they help make everything way more productive.

One thing I have noticed, is that I've become photo-obsessed since having a cell phone / iPod touch. I don't take selfies and constantly post them, what I do is take pictures of nature, my animals, projects I'm working on, and places I go. Often, the reason I take and post the pictures, is in order to keep my social media accounts updated and active. I especially do it on my business accounts, because it puts the company names in front of people, and interesting pictures tend to attract attention, which could lead to new customers and future business.

Smartphones are bringing the elderly into the 21st century. I'm sure you all know someone who is scared of technology. They are stuck in their ways and can't stand the thought of having to use technology to complete their daily task. My dad was one of those people. But now he doesn't know what to do without his smart phone. He took a trip with my mom where she used her phone for everything. Checking into their flight, hotel room, car rental, navigation. After that he was sold. And now he's branched out to using the computer more and loves their new smart tv. Back to the topic, people are becoming brain dead if using their smart phones I the wrong way. Like to play games, and stalk people on social media. But many like myself use it to educate myself on new topics. So its all in the way you choose to use it.

Is true we benefit from technology. But do you prefer being there face to face and tell them goodnight? I think the way we've made technology be is good and bad at the same time.
The good thing it has made things like emergency communications easier. But also it has made face to face communication heard. And no matter what we say is not a problem, I've found is number 1 problem in technology.

I think many people now use cell phones to connect to everyone which is kinda sad. I feel like people are in the Matrix and they have to be plugged in just to feel connected. People forgotten how to be connected through nature, now most people are connected through technology. I wonder how far are we going to be allowed to evolve?

We do have a tendency of using our smartphones on a daily, hourly and even a minutes end basis. These devices were created to help us explore things that would be beneficial to our everyday life and also for entertainment purposes. Most of us do rely on our smartphones to complete different tasks such as sending emails, leaving a note on a specific date on the calendar to a simple morning alarm clock. I do not believe we are becoming "brain dead" but I do think that we are lazier than we were 10 years ago. Smartphones make life "easier" in a way so people depend on them for various reasons.

I might add, we are becoming anti-social as well because of this very thing you talk of @AmandaHall, I read this somewhere, it sort of relates to the whole hand-held devices that we are so scared to put down and breath once in awhile...

"Relationships became harder because conversations became texting, arguments became phonecalls, feelings became subliminal messages online,..." Am afraid human interaction is becoming extinct :(

I believe you are correct. The average person uses their phone as a crutch for information. If the entire technological grid were to go dark tomorrow i don't think that many people would even know what to do. It's too easy to instantly find then forget something that you need to know. It offers no incentive to keep the knowledge or facts in your brain when it's right there. I personally don't like having a phone attached to me 24/7 but to each their own. I tend to move more toward real life situations and activities and I think it's sad how many people are missing out on real interactions with each other. The funny thing is that it's usually seen as a younger generation type of thing but I'm only 26. It'll be scary to see the next two generations as adults.

Not necessarily "brain dead" -- but, perhaps, we have serious fixation issues. Our attention is (primarily) focused on our gadgets, and we are like Pavlov's doggies, just conditioned to the rush of finding the information that we need (at hand), the social interaction, and hearing the bells and whistles of our electronic toys.

I don't believe we are becoming brain dead from smart phone use, but our habits definitely affect our brain and further generations in the long term. Studies have shown that things such as our attention span have decreased over the last couple of years due (in part) by electronics such as our smartphones. Time will tell how using these devices affect us and wether its a positive or negative trait at that. and I would bet money on the fact the it's the ladder.

I feel like people are too dependent upon their smartphones anymore. I hate when I go into a restaurant and see people on their phones instead of enjoying the company of the people they're eating their meal with. My 13-year-old daughter feels the same way. While I don't do this when I'm out and about, in fact I actually turned off my data, my daughter points out that I do it too much at home. I guess it's something for me to work on getting better at.
