Do you play video games competitively or casually?

Nowadays, we are seeing a rise in the competitive aspect of video gaming. It's existed since the '90s, of course, but the following is only growing larger by the day. It has its own name, too; "e-sports." There are countless debates sparked over whether or not video gaming deserves to be referred to as a sport, if video games should be played competitively, and the implications of competition.

It's a rather controversial topic and it would be interesting to see if the user base prefers to game on the "serious" or "fun" side!

For me, I play casually because there isn't any need of raging. I saw this video where a kid (looked about 7) was raging at a Team Fortress 2 game. Cussing was included and his mom came in and didn't even care. Games are fun and all but fun when you hear people shouting and ruining it for you. Really irritates me.

I used to play classic Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo:Reach at a competitive level. I had fun playing at tournaments and putting people in the dumpster, but I never had the time or money (or sponsorships for that matter) to head out to big events to have a chance at going 'pro'.

I'm considering trying to make something happen with Dota 2 since the vast majority of players are awful.

I play casually most of the time, and I always play alone and offline, since my friends and girlfriend are not interested in gaming these days.

I used to have an Xbox Live account with my 360, which I used solely for playing FIFA online competitively. But not anymore, as I find it to be a huge time sink and there's , you know, "real life" matters requiring my attention.

I play PC games in a casual manner. I don't have any access to the RPG games, or whatever. I am just happy, satisfied and contented playing Plants vs Zombies. I found it challenging, fun and enjoyable.

They consider chess a sport - so why not videogames? Both use intellect instead of physical strength, but both are very challenging and competitive.

Don't believe me? The fact is, Chess is considered a sport in more than 100 countries around the world, and recognized as a sport by the Olympic Games.

How are video games any different from Chess? Both require equal amounts of strategy and as the definition here states, the objective of these games is to win.

"It is worth reminding ourselves why the International Olympic Committee and over 100 countries recognise chess as a sport. Competitive. The objective of a game of chess is to win." Source: http://londonchessconference.com/a-question-of-sport/

It depends on the game. If it's a game in which I don't strive to be adept at, I don't care whether or not I lose or win in a certain area. If it's a game I do strive to be good at, I tend to be insulted if someone claims that my skills are sub-par which at that point, I'd kindly as you to engage combat with me in said game.

I play casually as I like to enjoy games, and not feel under pressure to beat someone else. I'm not good enough, in my opinion, to play competitively. Although it would be a cool job to do.

Hi Persona, I too enjoy the casual genre of games, I love solitaire, match games and hidden object games. I feel that competitive playing is great for some but not for me, the pressure would be too much. I would forget every trick that I learned right before the tournament or match began, and then of course after it's all over I would remember everything.

Competing has never been one of my strong points, I enjoy just playing the game at my own speed. Even when I play games that have the option of timed or relaxed, I always check off the relaxed mode, because I don't like the pressure of being rushed, you should enjoy the game you're playing.

Even tho I play competively, I still can say me and my friends still enjoys the game. I'm a sports attic and there's no other way to enjoy a sports game casually. Plus playing the computer to me doesn't build skills as if you are playing another human. And I'm proud to say I'm a true gamer that have or had every system. Just loving my skills from being competive.

I only play in a competitive form when I am with my friends for the most part. I typically only play casually due to a similar though process of what @Scott said, it is not worth getting upset or "rage" over it. However, admittedly, I have gotten angry and "raged" a little when even playing casually.

I think all players often play casually but can sometimes get upset when trying to just have fun. That is just the competitive nature in everyone.

It depends on the game for me. Of course I like to win and will play competitively because of that, but I'm not going to go smash my computer or throw my PS4 out the window if I lose. There is no point in playing a video game if you always rage at it.

If I play on a PC, I play competitively. However, if on a console I prefer to just relax and enjoy myself more. It's hard not to get competitive when playing games like Counter Strike and Call of Duty (especially when due to the "baiters" in the chat)! I am much more likely to competitively play an FPS game than, say, a racing game as I feel like I am the character and have to win or die (also an experience you don't get on consoles, having to keep your hands in the same place all the time).

Just like MikeTheKnight said, it really depends on the type of game I am playing. Some games are made to be played casually and for fun while some games are made to be played competitively. Example of a competitive game is "need for speed", a car racing game. You can't win in that type of game without competing with your opponents.

On the other hand, games like "the sims 4" are basically meant to be played just for fun.

I only play video games casually at moment, but my friends and I agree that when it comes to sports, shooters, and fighting games, I may want to consider playing competitively one day. I'm already super competitive when it comes to anything so I have the mindset for it, and it would be nice to make some money off of games since I play them daily as it is.

I play video games to relax, unwind, relieve stress from a long day. If that's the case, why would I want to play competitively, with a bunch of 15 year old kids with unrestricted internet time? The online gaming community is as toxic as ever, where you will get reamed for the slightest mistakes by perfectionist children who spend all day playing games. It's not a very welcoming community, and don't even get me started on pay-to-win games. Video games nowadays have so much additions to their games, such as skins, new voices, wallpapers, that the video game companies actually bleed their customers dry with all these payment options.

It is way simpler to just open up Witcher 3 or Skyrim, play a few hours roaming the wilderness, fighting monsters, and gaining glory; rather than mingle online with the chaos of gamers who would cheat you out of a good game just so they can feel better about themselves. I like solo play, and in my own world, I control what I do, whenever I do it.

I am not a gamer. I used to play casually when I was in high school and college. When I was younger, I used to play nintendo with my siblings but we always end up quarelling because no one wants to help with household chores. Nowadays, based on my observations, kids in the village where I live go to the computer rental store to play their favorite video games. And most play competitively - I don't know how it works but they trash talk.

The last video game I played was Halo the very first one that came out on Play Station like in 2000. I have never played another video game since competitively or casually lol. Driving games are so hard to stear I'm hopeless.

Do you play competitively Harisali5 ?
