Do you think services like Netflix will beat out real theatres in the future?

Let's be honest, more people than I can count are really lazy, also, take the fact that several key players in the movie industry are starting to stream their new movies on Netflix, take Adam Sandler as an example.

It may be unlikely to happen in the next couple of years but after that nobody knows for sure, it's almost like Wall-E is coming to life :p

    What are your thoughts?

I don't think it is Netflix to blame for our laziness. I think that technology in general has made it too easy for us to enjoy movies instead of going to the theater. Netflix makes it easier to watch movies by bringing it to our living rooms instead of having to go to Blockbuster or movie store, which have faded out in the past few years. As for celebrities who are making films on Netflix they are trying to make a living.

Streaming is the wave of the future and feeds our need for on-demand viewing. I still frequent the theater only by tradition because it was a large part of my childhood and the only way to see new releases during that time. However, our society now has heavy reliance on having everything within hand's reach so the necessity of commuting to the local theater no longer exists.

As an example, I can pre order every film currently set to debut from my Apple Tv device. This will reduce the need for me to drive to the theater, stand in lengthy lines, and I can view films in the privacy of my own home.

I think Netflix and Hulu are already making inroads in this area. They have tons of new programming made just for them. And some of it is pretty good stuff!

My family switched to Netflix about 2 years ago. We'd had Dish Satellite TV for about 10 years before that. Since we switched (and later added Hulu) we haven't missed regular TV at all--there's just so much variety!

So it wouldn't surprise me at all if Netflix and Hulu expand their services to include movies that perform better than theater movies. They've got the money behind them to do it, and the reputation to take it to the next level.
