Do you read reviews first?

Most times, I read reviews before I watch a movie because it helps to identify bad movies from good ones. Moreover, as an upcoming filmmaker, I see movie reviews as an opportunity to learn the steps to take in order to avoid making a bad movie.

Unfortunately, movie reviews largely influence our interests and love for a particular movie, for instance, one may pass a comment or judgement on a movie solely because of what a reviewing website says.

I read reviews (only specialized reviews) before watching a movie in theaters, but it's more like a habit, 'cause in the end I never let myself be influenced by them (even if it's a positive review about a movie that I'm waiting to watch for a long time... in this case, I always get more anxious :)). Only after I watch the film, I read the general reviews (unspecialized reviews) in forums about cinema, especially to know what other people are thinking about the same movie and to be able to comment/discuss with them.

Rotten Tomatoes is an amazing website that collects a large percentage of reviews from specialized critics around the world. For unspecialized reviews, IMDb is a good choice.

I love watching movies but never read reviews first as I seldom agree with Rotten Tomatoes or any of the sites dedicated to providing "quality reviews". In fact, I peruse Rotten Tomatoes when seeking a good laugh because most often reviews are prejudiced and partial. I strongly believe advertising dollars and revenue generation play significant roles in some of their ratings especially ones where the writing seems incredibly biased and unfair.

At one point, I also valued the input of movie critics but think the internet slowly aided in making the profession obsolete. Nowadays there are sites with suggestions and recommendations from real people just like me for everything so if I am seeking advice I often turn to these sources.

I never read reviews for movies. So many times, the reviewer doesn't even enjoy the same genres that I do, so why would I trust their judgment? If the trailer is good, and I like the plot or the character, I will watch the movie. I will form my own opinions.

However, there is one exception to this rule. If I know someone personally, and I value their opinion, if they have negative things to say about a movie that I thought I wanted to see, I will check out more reviews. But only for that movie, and only because I had a doubt.

Yes, sometimes I'm disappointed. But sometimes the movie turns out to be a sleeper and goes on to wow more viewers.

I personally think it depends on the trailer of the movie. Sometimes I usually dont read movie reviews but then again most of the time i do. The main reason I choose not to read the movie reviews is because I like to watch a movie with a open mind, rather than smogging my brain with the peoples opinions.
