While good graphics will obviously add to the immersion in any game, I don't think they are essential for a good experience and I'd rather the developers focus on other things if they don't have a lot of money available. I often find myself playing old and ugly games like Tomb Raider, which most people would consider obsolete, both graphically and mechanically, today. What i really hate are inconsistent graphics, where it looks like developers have pasted advanced graphical effects on a really old game.

Your thoughts? Have gamers been spoilt by recent advances in 3D graphics technology?

I think it's as important as it needs to be.

No game's success is solely conditioned on its graphics, but the storyline, character development and other game elements.

The purpose of graphics is to enhance the experience. No more, no less.

Graphics certainly play an important role, but the importance, I think, is based on independent and individual factors.

For some, it's decisive in their immersion: without good graphics the storyline becomes inconsequential to the quality of the game, for others it is merely a device to communicate an engaging story, or simply create a connection between what you see on the screen, and everything else.

Graphics are certainly unquestionably, but to what extent, that's for you to decide.

Graphics are a cool adition to have but they are not extremly important to the game.I would sacrifice graphics to a really good story or gameplay.Graphics are going up and up in games and I can't complain about it

Call me spoiled, but I like to have a balance in my games.

I want good story, awesome graphics and easy to use game controls. When it comes to games from the 90's and beyond, I have no problem with the graphics because I know that was top of the line, at the time. It's like classics for music or an old show, it has an old magic that just invokes someone within the people that is glued to it. I can't help but want to play Sims 2 every now and again because it was SUCH a step forward in the right direction for the mechanics and improved graphics - at the time - while I only play Sims 3 every now and again because, while it made improvements, it lacked in stability.

Thus, why I say, that graphics AREN'T always everything. It doesn't stop me from dreaming of a game where I've handed all 3 of my listings, however.

Graphics are essential part, because it's 2016. However, gameplay is most important part. I personally like RPG genre, with beautiful landscapes and open world. Best game i've played with awesome storyline, gameplay and astonishing graphics is Witcher 3. It's so amazingly made, you'll even enjoy side quests!

It depends, there are games like first-person shooters, sports and simulators where eye candy graphics are essential, as the more realistic the games look the better the immersion on the game. For other genres, I don't think is that important, strategy games for example, when you are looking at a map most of the time, does it really matter if the map it's 2D or 3D? Same with RPG's, games like Pokemon for instance have been an amazing success even though they had mediocre graphics.

For me graphics is very important. I been playing video games since the 70s and as I got older I love how the games got more and more realistic. I just found it to be amazing how far engineering has come over time. It's awsome how some 3D games just look like its jumping out the screen..lol.

Graphics are not as important as game play but if we live in an era in which the graphics can indeed be excellent, it should be excellent. If the graphics are not decent, it just displays the designer's laziness. It's always nice to have pleasant visuals.

For any game, graphics are an important factor. Ether for the user who likes good graphics or for the developer who can show-of their ability in visual engineering, the aspects of a very eye catching game are endless. But at same time it must be very user friendly too.., because when graphical enhancements increase with new and newer games, so do the need for better equipment (e.g., VGA cards, RAMs, Processors, etc.), to handle such large amounts of data in a small amount of time, which at some times can be very costly.

If you are a serious gamer like me; who wants to get the best gaming experience out of a game and wouldn't settle for no less than the highest graphical settings, you wouldn't like it when games starts to lag on your high-end gaming rig you built six months ago with up to date parts, you wouldn't be happy at all. When games like Crysis 3 came out that supported only Direct X 11 based GPUs; many people who loved the series were disappointed because they were unable to play the game.

Also the game engine (e.g., Crytek, frostbite, ect.), and graphical optimization plays a big part of any game's visuals. For example, take "Cryostasis : Sleep of Reason", a game with an awesome story line that had very poor graphical optimization which made the game super laggy, even in best computers at the time. But the game "medal of honor 2010" that came out a year later, had almost the best graphics on any game at the time that I've played. It had no lagging issues what so ever, even on highest graphics in normal computers. Borderlands series is another example, 2K did an amazing job with the story and comic book like visuals that needed low system requirements which led to it's success.

I personally don't think life like graphics are a must have feature, but if you are true gamer you would appreciate it as much as I do.

Representation at times get unfavorable criticism with regards to talking about computer games. Without a doubt, everyone enjoys great illustrations, yet it's gotten to be something of a leisure activity to blame a designer for utilizing great representation as a reason to convey poor gameplay. Design are likewise utilized as a substitute with regards to examining regardless of whether engineers are "stupefying" diversions. The contention goes something like this: "Designers don't need to make attentive, drawing in gameplay to offer units. They just need to make something that looks great. Hence, engineers couldn't care less about gameplay any longer, they just think about design."

The truth is that representation are vital. They are as basic to great amusement outline as some other repairman, and should be treated with the same measure of admiration and objectivity. The way that high determination design speak to a more extensive gathering of people than more recondite gameplay components is not motivation to censure their interest, but rather the substance of how they function. They work by engaging our faculties, by drawing our consideration instinctively and clutching it, by drenching us in their reality. Designers who convey staggering illustrations aren't neglecting to convey great gameplay on account of their emphasis on super-practical representation; they are conveying one component of gameplay extremely well yet neglecting to convey on others. What's more, therefore individuals will keep on purchasing their diversions. In some way or another, underneath all the scholarly posing of the savants and general society avowels to our companions, individuals realize that great representation matter. In the case of nothing else, there is magnificence to be found in the surface of things.

I feel as if most people take graphics to seriously nowadays. I think that there are some modern titles that are graphically beautiful that couldn't hold a candle to some of the awesome SNES or N64 games that I grew up playing. I think that good graphics can be really cool, but sacrificing the game play in favor of good graphics is seriously uncool. Graphics, to me, are a superficial feature of a game at best.

Graphics are a tool. You need a visual interface that can clearly express what is going on. In the old arcade games with a limited palette the graphics were done in high contrast to easily tell apart your character or vehicle from the rest. A lot of the dangers we learned them after making mistakes.

Donkey Kong, you have Jump man, whose choice was made to simplify things. "I can't draw hair", let's give him a hat. Let's have him wear overalls so people can tell clearly the position of his arm. Let's give him a moustache so we don't have to worry about giving him a mouth. And it worked.

Now we can do so much more. Having the best graphics is not bad on itself, so long it is not detracting from other things. A lot of resources and money nowadays go into creating hyper realistic looking graphics. It is a style choice. The problem with ultra realistic graphics is that they become outdated really fast as technology advances. Games with a more proper style tend to visually age better.

I am not saying we should abandon attempts to make realistic graphics. Thanks to all these attempts in film and games people have become way better at it. It is perfectly fine to enjoy having a game that can make you feel like you could be staring into real life. The graphic has to suit the purpose and vision of the game.

You can have fun in Battlefield and you can have fun playing Splatoon. Both games have the graphics serving them to better fill their creators vision. One simulating a real landscape and another bringing you to take the role of a different creature than you. Both are enjoyable in their own way.

The real shame is animation studios going broke because the projects they are contracted for are too ambitious that cost more to do than what is realistically possible to get back. Just to have that amazing cutscene, other areas of the game is required to suffer reduction costs. Sometimes it pays, sometimes even with a successful game it might not be enough or it might be a bit too late.

Graphics obviously play an important role in any video game. After all, if the graphics are so bad you can't tell what's what on the screen it can make the game unplayable. That being said, I still enjoy the old turn-based RPGs of the PS1 and before eras, so super duper graphics aren't that important to me. But when I look at things like Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy (the latest ones) and the Upcoming Detroit game it's hard not to think these games look stunning. I only saw the trailer for Detroit a few weeks back and it looked amazing to me.

What I don't like though is how a lot of game companies nowadays are resorting to the very old style pixel art form. With games like Terraria and Fez it works very well, but a lot of them just seem slap dash and no effort put into them at all. Many of them look so bad they could've been easily done in MS Paint, frame by frame.

Over all, graphics are important but do not make or break a game for the most part unless they are so bad they make the game unplayable.

The graphics are very important, yes, but it can only attract you to a video game and not keep you glued to your device. I worked on the narrative techniques of ''God of War: Ascension'' for my final year project and discovered the effectiveness of a good story line. There is no video game with a good graphic that will completely win my interest without a good story line. As far as I am concerned, the story of a video game is more important than its captivating graphics.

When I began to learn film making, I discovered that the camera you use does not matter as much as the story you have. I also learnt that pictures do not essentially matter as the idea passed. This applies to video games too. What really strikes is a good story.

The graphics of a game are the least important thing. Some people do like it when the game looks realistic but just good graphics doesn't make good game. I think Minecraft proved to everyone that the graphics of a game aren't really that important, it's much more about the gameplay.

I feel graphics definitely are important, in today's age no one would really enjoy playing highly pixellated and blurry games. (Imagine Fallout 4 with extremely low resolution!) However, other elements are still more important that graphics. For example, the plot and gameplay is what keeps the player interested. Graphics alone with poor gameplay and plot make a terrible game. Good gameplay and plot with bad graphics could still mean a great game. (Think of minecraft) Good gameplay and plot, coupled with great graphics make an excellent masterpiece. (Maybe DOOM?) It depends on what the graphics are paired with.

I believe that graphics is a important aspect when judging a good video game. A video game with good graphics adds to the overall experience when playing the video game. I have played many of my old school games on consoles like Genesis and 64 but they did not have the graphics that we see in video games today. Today practically every high selling video game has a good story line, game play and graphics. According to me graphics, game play and and story line are the three most important aspects of a good video games. What would Call of Duty be without primo graphics ? What would Assassins creed be without good graphics? Graphics are a MUST in video games!

From experience, graphics may not be everything. (Look at Runescape :O) That being said, graphics is still one of the main deciding factor that gamer lean on in purchasing the game. It is an element of first impression and game companies totally understand that. There are many elements that must come together to make a great game, great and one of its element is graphics.

I think graphics are vastly overrated nowadays. For some people it seems to be the sole deciding factor in whether a game can be called good or not. It has also lead to this insane competition between game developers and as a consenquence we keep having to buy better and better computers to play any newer games. On the console side, they have to keep pushing out more powerful consoles.

Graphics aren’t such a big deal to me in games. I’m much more of a story-oriented person, the plot needs to be good and the general atmosphere needs to be correct for the setting and amazingly, this too can be achieved without top end graphics (think of Silent Hill, for example).

Graphics isn't ALL that, but I do see it essential to a game overall. One reason being is that better graphics attract more players. It gives the players a better experience while playing the game. Not much people want to play a game with horrible looking graphics. I think game play and plot is more important in my opinion, but graphics are definitely needed.
