Are you allowed to listen to music at your place of work? (Or do you anyway?)

I work from home (online transcription), so I guess I could listen to music whenever I want to. But the only thing is, I can never put the volume up too loud, or I won't be able to hear the audio files I'm typing out. I keep on Music Choice (TV) 427 - 90's Rock at the volume of about 5 or 6, so I only vaguely hear it.

What about you? Do you listen to headphones/earphones while you are at work? Or what about on your computer (youtube, etc.) if you have an office job, or still in school?

Does your boss/teacher allow it? Do you do it anyway when he or she is not around?;)

I used to be allowed to listen to music at my old work and find that it helps me to concentrate and ignore distractions in the office. Unfortunately in my current role this is not permitted and there is no leeway on that. The only time we are allowed to wear headphones is when we are writing minutes up as this requires being able to listen to a tape recorder. I therefore use this time to listen to music and pretend that I'm listening to the tape recorder. As I take notes quickly, I don't need to use to use the tape most times!

I work at a hot sauce factory in a really small town, so it's got pretty slow business. Normally I'm working in the gift shop portion in the little office listening to everything 80's.

One time it got awkward though, because a customer came in when I was listening to Hungry Like The Wolf by Duran Duran, and it was at the part where there's obnoxious moaning in the background. Definitely a cringe-worthy moment.
