I think it really depends on the movie for me. For example there were a couple African, Italian, and Spanish movies that I absolutely loved. The Koreans have some great horror movies as well. However, there are some I just really can't get into and maybe it is a culture thing or perhaps it is my mood, but sometimes I really cannot stand them. I think I really need to be able to focus on the movie and not doing a million other things for me to really enjoy them.

When I was a little girl my Grandmother took me to see foreign movies with subtitles. She understood the language and I didn't understand it yet for I was just a little girl. I quickly learned to read the subtitles for foreign movies. I went to Chinese and Japanese foreign movies a lot while growing up in Hawaii. Now on television, I watch both Chinese and Japanese foreign movies on TCM when they are on. But watching anime on toonchannel I prefer dubbed instead of subtitles.

I think that watching a movie in original language with subtitles could improve our knowledge on that language, so it can be a great training that combines learning with pleasure.

I also think that watching a movie without subtitles could be more useful because you're not inattentive on reading subtitles at the bottom of the screen and you can pay attention on movie plot.

English isn’t my first language, and I don’t enjoy movies from my own country, so movies with subtitles used to be the only option, before I learned English well enough not to need subtitles :D

I never had a problem with it. Sometimes people talk so quietly or otherwise unclearly that you have a problem staying with the plot, which is why it’s great that DVDs and BluRays usually have the options for English subtitles on English language movies.

It can also help with learning foreign languages, as has been mentioned, and I think it’s good to watch movies from all over – it gives you a surprising amount of perspective.

I'll gladly take subtitles over dubbing any day. But most Americans seem to be allergic to subtitles, my parents included. My dad complains that he reads slow so he misses the action while reading the dialogue.

I'm a pretty fast reader, and I've never had an issue keeping my eye on both action and text, but a lot of people do.

Most of the foreign movies with subtitles that I have watched were mostly Chinese or Japanese. I don't enjoy these movies as much as the ones from my country which are mostly in English since I find it hard to follow the dialogue and keep my eye on the action. However, some of them are really entertaining and I do all I can to follow the plot to the end.

Lately I have had great interest in Bollywood movies with subtitles. I can't speak a sentence in Hindi, but I love Bollywood movies mostly for their unique sense of humor. My ability to read fast has improved and am able to enjoy these type of movies more.

I usually watch movies with subtitles and I enjoy it. Occasionally I watch dubbed movies too. But seeing with subtitles help us learn the language without our knowledge. If we watch the movie with full concentration we can be able to register some of the words and dialogues used by the actors and people there.

So, I really recommend you to watch movies with subtitles rather than dubbed movies. :)

I prefer watching a good dub to watching subtitles.

Some people say they're so used to watching subtitles that they don't detract from the experience at all, but I doubt that's a common feeling in any country. Otherwise, why does no one make silent films anymore? Surely the filming process is easier if you don't have to record the actors' speaking, and certain kinds of bad acting can be more easily concealed? So why don't we see a lot of movies recorded without sound, then having music, sound effects, and subtitles put in later?

Yes I do enjoy foreign movies with subtitles. For me it is easier to understand the whole story when movies have subtitles. I really hate movies when it is an action filled with lots of noises that I cannot really understand their voices. If a movies doesn't have any subtitle and I am watching on my computer then before start watching I will look for an srt file in the internet first. If I have no choice in watching without subtitle then after watching the movie I always do search in the wikipedia the plot of the story.

Movies with subtitles are a bit hard to watch. Personally l find it very hard to just sit in front of the TV and watch a movie that the characters don't speak English. I would describe such an experience as watching a movie while it's on mute because l don't understand a thing they are saying. It's also tiresome to read the subtitles every now and then.

Yes! watching and reading at the same time is a no brainer to me. Maybe I do it because sometimes I have trouble hearing what the characters are saying when I'm watching Hollywood films that is...

but when it comes to Japanese films, of course I'll be needing a subtitle for those movies. Speaking of Japanese movies, I love the movie titles as Golden Slumbers it's a very fun movie.

I love foreign movies with English subtitles. I enjoy them when I watch any movie that has English subtitles embedded with it. Sometimes I go as far as downloading the subtitle file just to get the best out the movie. As you know, picture alone cannot tell the words spoken in the movie.

I hate them. I can not concentrate on what I am watching because I need to look down at the bottom of the screen just to understand the conversation. Some movies are actually good but the subtitles are killing the mood. I would wait for a version of that movie with English dub.

I have watched many films with subtitles, especially hindi films from Bombay since I was a child. At times i feel what is said on the screen by the actors does not match what the subtitles are saying.

These films have a common theme, boy loves girl, the family does not like one of them for some reason or another and then at the end there is a big wedding with song and dance.

Hi everyone, Personally I never watch a movie in a foreign language with subtitles it is annoying and disturbing, I prefer to select a movie in a language that I understand and hear everything myself or a translated version otherwise I think I would concentrate on reading the subtitles instead of following the movie itself, So no I don't watch movies with subtitles.

Yes, i do. A few years ago, i avoided any movie that wasn't in English. However, i now actively watch Korean and Indian movies now and reading subtitles has actually taught me a few phrases in Hindu and Korean. Most of all, it's taught me a lot about other cultures and has sparked a curiosity about Korea which i plan to explore next year by visiting the country.

This is one of the things that makes me to watch foreign movies, The subtitles. I like it because it helps to build my grammar when I was young. There was a time I wouldn't watch any other movies apart from the foreign ones. The movies are also interesting and educating

As for myself I enjoy foreign movies with subtitles than the dubbed movies because it's original and they haven't changed anything. Though the problem with some subtitles sometimes is the grammar and I can really say is the subtitles are bad, mainly because the person who put the subtitles is not really good in English.

Most movies I've watched before with subtitles are Chinese movies because I find it so amusing, they have great movies out there however when it comes to the subtitles it would be 50/50 scenario. It's either 50% you will like the movie or 50% chances that you'll just look for another one with better subtitles.
