This is just my opinion, but I think that scary movies back in the 80’-90’s were much better than today’s scary movies. It just seems to me that a lot of them are based on the same plot and just are not very unique anymore. Don’t get me wrong though, there are some like The Conjuring and The Conjuring Two that are very good scary movies. I just wish that they would be a lot more creative when it comes to making scary movies these days. There aren’t too many scary movies out there that actually scare me. I want to watch a scary movie and be completely scared. What about you?

Agreed! They also seem to remake many of the older horror movies adding gory computerized cgi effects. Scary movies today also depend on too much nudity and not enough character development. I did enjoy The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2. At least these movies had good plots and used old style scare tactics of loud sounds.

Since I am much older now, I might find it very hard to be scared these days. This does not subtract from the fact that I still like some horror movies if they are done right.

I also think that Scary Movies today rely far too much on CGI. In the 80's and 90's, horror movies had far more practical effects. These effects were made by very talented artists who cared a lot for their creations. They took into account how every shot was framed, how the actors would interact with the effects, and the most intricate details that would show up in the film. When so many people pay so much attention to detail, the end result tends to be something far scarier and memorable.

On the other hand, when the movie makers just add a lot of CGI in post-production, trying only to make "gory" scenes, it's no wonder that audiences find these films way less scary than those they saw so many years ago.

I by one means or another concurred that Horror Films these days aren't that terrifying any longer, however I think it relies on upon the creator of the movie. 80's and 90's Horror Films are great in a way that it will send chills down your spine like the movie The Exorcist, The Omen and The Shining, those are really some of the best Horror Films ever.

Obviously, there are additionally awesome Horror Films that you can watch nowadays like Insidious, The Conjuring and The Grudge. A portion of the best Horror Movies that I have watched are not English but rather Asian Movies and I can say that Asian (particularly Japanese and Thai) Horror Films are the best that it will truly send shudders and will keep you up throughout the night.

I still haven't finished watching The Conjuring, I've been trying to watch for a long time time but I get scared and have to stop for a while.
As far as other horror films, I think the biggest thing is that in the 80's and 90's we were kids, so those films were scarier because we didn't think the way we do now. I re-watched some of those movies as an adult and thought they were silly even though I remember thinking they were terrifying when I was a kid.

I agree. I'm an 80's kid, so "A Nightmare on Elm Street", "Friday the 13th", and "Halloween" were just a few I grew up watching. They don't make them like that anymore. Those movies in particular seemed to be super scary to me, but maybe it was because I was a kid! "A Nightmare on Elm Street" got kind of cheesy after the 2nd one though, in my opinion. As an adult, I still watch these movies on occasion and I must admit that Michael Myers in that mask still creeps me out!

Child's Play was horrifying when I was a child. I remember actually going to bed early if I knew my family was going to watch it. It came on around Holloween time and my birthday of course is in October.

Now I can watch it and laugh at the bad quality of the Chucky doll. It was really bad when I watched it in my adult years. It's so many ways to beat him up. Chucky has just ran its course with me.

"A Nightmare on Elm Street" was the scariest movie ever when I was a kid. I agree that mask does something to me still to this day.

I found myself laughing at how slow Michael Myers walked when chasing his victim. How could he catch them with that stiff, slow walk of his? I got to mature to be scared of this movie anymore.

I agree that horror movies aren't as good as they used to be, but I think the 80's Chucky, Elm Street and Jason movies, escalated the brutality and redefined the slasher movies in general. Although I really enjoyed those movies, in my opinion, Hostel and Saw clones aren’t going to stop popping out like Pez until the numbers start dropping significantly.

Personally, I prefer scary movies with aliens, vampires, zombies, and vicious animals like werewolves and sasquatches, more than psychos tortured as children. I don't mind ghost movies if they're done well, though. I have seen quite a few really good, original European horror movies, but for some inexplicable reason they tend to kill the good guys at the end, a tad too much for my taste.

I recently read an article that basically stated the same thing. Today's horror movies are all based on demonic beings, gore, or remakes. While this is interesting for a while it quickly becomes boring and tired. I think somewhere down the line the extreme factor and the gross factor made more money than movies that actually go in-depth to what horror is. Horror is a play on tragedy and fear and it no longer focuses on those two things.

I have to say I agree that today's horror flicks, for the most part, aren't nearly as good as those from the past. I saw The Conjuring when it was first released and liked it, and I recently watched Conjuring 2 and I'm happy to say that I actually jumped at one point. I'm more into suspense than gore, although some gore is acceptable. One of my favorites from the past is Children of the Corn. Someday I would like to marathon all of the Children of the Corn movies. I've seen a few of them, but the first is the one I have watched the most.

Most horror movies mistake gore with being scary.

Anyone can make a movie full of blood and guts, it doesn't mean they're a talented filmmaker.

Stuff like Hostel, Human Centipede, Cannibal Holocaust, etc. is just cheap and exploitative.

It takes a filmmaker with skill and understanding of building tension and suspense to craft a truly memorable horror film. John Carpenter's Halloween, Ridley Scott's Alien, etc. They relied more on ominous vibes and build-up than gore.

Those scary movies back in 80's were much more interesting and has a story to tell the audience besides scaring people. Films like Exorcist, A nightmare on Elm's street, The silence of the lambs etc.. were pretty interesting to watch.

In the recent movies, I couldn't find a proper storyline and instead of scaring people they make us feel gross and develop hatred towards watching horror movies in future. I don't blame all the movies, though. I personally like The ring and Conjuring.

The Silence of the Lambs is really more of a psychological thriller than what I would consider a horror movie, per se.

I couldn't agree more. Scary movies today are focused in other topics, such as gore and sex, not in fear to the unknown. I miss the days where you could not sleep for hours thinking that the girl from the exorcist was going to appear in the corner of your room, and that is a memory of true fear. Today the movies we receive do not impress the audiences anymore, they are regular and predictible; the plot is common and gross, so the movie industry should think about producing real scary movies.

There are some movies which can scare the hell out of you, but I agree that they are not scary anymore. Most of the times I see a horror movie I see them as if it was a comedy-action film. I agree with blosso that they focus on other concepts and not fear.

Yes I agree. Scary movies aren't as scary as they were in the 90's. child's play when chucky was a little doll that was killings people was scary. until the latest chucky movie come out and is more of a reason why everything happened in the last movies than a progressing scary movies series.

3 Reasons Why Today's Horror Films Are Just Not Scary Anymore.

F**king jump scares, get off my damn garden, hop alarms! Truly, Stuckmann wasn't lying when he said that this strategy is one of the least expensive you can use in a blood and gore movie, and let me explain to you why. Truth be told, I can simply present the little spiel I've been providing for anybody who'd hear it out for as far back as quite a while.

Mismarketing,How ordinarily have you viewed a trailer for a blood and guts movie, gone to see said film, and were 100% persuaded you entered the wrong theater assembly room. Awfulness trailers are famously misrepresentative of the movies they should see, which is sad for the producers, since they don't have much control over how their film is showcased.

Terrible blood and guts movies can in any case do awesome at the container office,There's something naturally amiss with this condition. "Terrible" ought to equivalent "disappointment", and "great" ought to equivalent "achievement", however that is simply not how it functions with regards to blood and gore movies (or any Hollywood movies besides). Terrible unnerving motion pictures resemble failure sentimental accomplices you attempt to get your companions to part ways with.

"Scary" movies nowadays are way too full of jumpscares which provide cheap horror that doesn't last, a good horror movie in my opinion is a movie which causes lingering horror, makes you think about it at night, a jumpscare doesn't accomplish that in any way. Movies like The Shining and Nosferatu have no jumpscares yet they are still considered scary. Only recent horror movie I liked was Don't Breathe.

Most of the horror movies these days lack the psychological touch in the script. Also there is less silence and atmospheric build up. So this reflects in the story. These days people want quicker build up of characters. This is hard to work out for horror. However psychological thriller genre seems to be getting better these days than horror.
