We’re all familiar with rock, pop, hip-hop, alternative, country, and the like. On occasion, though, something else will pop up on the radar, like coldwave, that falls into a niche. What are some of your favorite oddball or niche genres?

As for me, I’m fond of krautrock and the aforementioned coldwave. Gypsy punk, like Gogol Bordello, is great fun as well. Noisier music like no wave makes great background music when I’m frustrated, and dream pop and shoegaze bring a relaxing element. Most of chillwave passed me by, but there were some good songs and artists.

I love Viking Metal which is very popular niche subgenre of Metal in Scandinavian countries. I found them very uplifting yet epic. They reminded me of videogame boss fight music in some ways. The Finnish Band Turisas is one of the perfect examples I can give. Imagine poetic lyrics combined with an epic metallic symphony, which is how I can describe their music.

Early house music and grime. I have some bossa nova, bolly wood soundtracks and a ton of other music in different languages in my record collection. Flying Lotus is really good too. I don't know what category he falls in but I'm a big fan of his work. If you're open to experimental music check him out.
