What qualities make a great teacher?

Teaching and being a good teacher are two different things because the former just get on with the job of passing an information across to some group of people while the latter strives to establish a connection with his/her set audience, thereby ensuring they understand exactly what is being passed across to them.

Also being a good teacher entail the quality of being able to break down the content and context of your information to the level of understanding of one's audience. For example, if you are teaching age range of 10-15years, a good teacher will strive to come down to age level of those kids to be able to truly establish a connection with them which will definitely encourage their flow and understanding of the information.

 

From my perspective a great teacher is one who is able to cater for the needs of the learners. Teaching is a two way process; it should involve both the teacher and the student in an interactive way. A good teacher should be able to pass across information that has the students interest always.

 

A good teacher will single you out but not embarrass you, when making your mistake known to everyone in the class as hey "nosleep3134" did it wrong,The embarrassment comes when the black or white board "ha" white board for mine so sharpies didn't help that my wrong answer would be painfully walked through to still get it wrong , saved by front row student with do your next to his then errased mine after he was finshed when all the good teachin went out to all the rest of the students Because i stopped listening as soon i reached the board from lack of knowledge cant overthink what you don't know so keeps goin and goin,some teachers just don't let you know your stupid anymore eitha you didnt want to look stupid so cheated got better or learned or did the easy way and skipped i looked stupid but wasnt hard to not care much of so many practicce rounds cause the really good teachers like you a little bit more when your late cant stay out the bathroom or just plain not there may just give you the easy a the take the hard f i just warned them that the tree was bar e before they went to pick it, heyy im a good teacher sort ov if you were wit me elongated context "slept" yes a good teacher cause the second i made i myself one i wasnt expecting a paycheck just that second .

 

A good teacher should relate to their students. They should be accessible to their students. Also, a good teacher should understand each students strengths and capacity to understand different issues. A good teacher should be a role model to their students and should aim to have a good personal relationship with all their students.

 

A great teacher is one who is flexible. A great teacher is one who sees each student as special and needing various level of attention in terms of their learning abilities.

The present education system tends to group students into two groups i.e the brilliant and the not-so-brilliant, which for me is very wrong as I believe each child has his or her own way of grasping information. Therefore the onus lies on the teacher as well as parent to spend more time with their wards in order to discover the best way for knowledge impartation.

Making learning fun is also a very good way to go. I remember learning the first 20 elements of the periodic table in chemistry using a Nigerian gospel song tune and believe me when I say it didn't take me fifteen minutes to get and I don't really have to revise much to regurgitate all twenty elements when called upon at any point in time.

 

I quite agree with you Sandywan, teachers should be seen by their students as being accessible and their relationship with their students should also be more than just standing in front of the lecture room and speaking.

 

You wrote like a great teacher ma'am. I can really relate with all that you said. A teacher must be flexible because they get to meet students from diverse family, background and culture.

 

The qualities of a good teacher is understanding , patience and must know his/her learner very well. He/She is also a well- rounded teacher. They should apply varied teaching style and techniques and they know that pupils have a multiple intelligences. That learning will be effective if teachers possess on this qualities.

 

Teacher should be punctual and regular in his workings.He/She should be cooperative with students in their problems and dealings.He/She must guide them in a more convenient and proper way.He/She should make students able to fight against the evil and deadly deeds of society.He/She should treat students gently and kindly so that they will be able to become shining stars of the society.

 

What defines a good teacher is their ability to transmit information to their students in a way that can be easy to comprehend based on their level of intelligence, a teacher has to be patient and care for every student on their own, a teacher has to have work ethics and should put the interest of his/her students above all. We may not appreciate the hard work and dedication teachers have but we must respect their job as it can either break or make a society.

 

In life everything teaches, but the good teacher, who can find? Good teacher is the one who listen and learn regularly either from the living or the dead, from whoever knowledge is shared, a good teacher learn.
A good teacher is known for his character while teaching others and share everything base on what he teaches often. He is also known for passion over his lesson, interest gained speeches for peoples development. Good teacher always look good, when impartation is revealed from the learners.

 

Hi everyone. I think you all have mentioned the qualities of a great teacher. Everything you guys said is true, but for me, personally I would say a teacher who is passionate about his/her job, willing to put in the time and effort needed to push students, a teacher that helps and supports students on their learning, and also they make things really fun, a teacher who understands the character and personality of students, someone who maintains a good attitude and always communicates with the students. These are qualities of a great teacher.


My 4th grade teacher is one of my past teachers I can never forget. She has really pushed me to limits and helped me go beyond what was expected of me. She inspired me really into becoming who I am like expressing myself. She has given me so many opportunities and always supported me like giving me chance to learn and make mistakes and understand what I did and get better and find out who I am. I still keep in touch with her I don't want to lose our friendship.

 

Let me begin by saying that teaching is more of a calling than of a career.Everyone can teach but there are those that do not even need to go to school to deliver since they already have this inborn qualities I will be talking about.
The humour factor:A great teacher is one who can make you concentrate and still enjoy the lesson at the same time.
The practical factor:A great teacher is able to relate the subject to real life scenarios.This makes the lesson real and true.
The time keeping factor:A great teacher is one who will not teach for long but will have taught a lesson you will never forget.If a student can visualise a lesson during exams it means they were taught only what is helpful and they understood every bit of the lesson.

 

A good teacher is the one who understands the student's weaknesses and strengthen them . Who puts more effort for students to achieve their best, who encourages students that they should try again and again even if they fail.

A good teacher is warm, enthusiastic and caring someone students can go with any problem and help them and who is accessible to students.

 

First,good teacher should understand what students needs, second he or she must be able to socialist with the students.there students will be able to share what they don't understand with their teacher

 

A good teacher must be: a life-long learner, an active listener, a creative planner, an efficient organizer. He/she must also be willing to adapt as necessary, admit mistakes, wait patiently, treat students with firmness and fairness, communicate honestly and with respect, remain professional but show compassion as needed. A good teacher is a hard worker who is willing to work extra hours without overtime or praise.

 

As an aspiring educator, an older sister to a 15-year-old junior high school student and a person who experienced inequality while studying, I must say that a great teacher should have the following qualities that I listed below.

- A teacher should be well educated, she should know and understand really well what she teaches.
- A teacher should have an exceptional moral value.
- A teacher should show empathy and compassion towards all the student.
- Set as a good example to everyone especially among students.
- He/she must be approachable because aside from family, a teacher should be the next in line when students are having troubles or problems.
- A teacher should not have any favoritism, treat everyone equally.
- A teacher should know that not all students are financially stable, he/she should give assignments or projects that will not cost a penny.
- A teacher should always keep in mind that not all students have a computer, printer and internet connection, he/she should not rely on making assignments that required using computer or internet.
- And most importantly a teacher should have a passion to teach not treat it as a stable job.

 

A good teacher must know the welfare of his student. He teaches the topics very clearly. He should also good when it comes to communication skills . One of the important things, a teacher should have a good attitude and good fellowship with his students.

 

Being a teacher's daughter is very lucky and blessed and I'm one of them. As I grow up I was surrounded by teachers in our family, I know for a fact and I witnessed the struggle and hardship of being a teacher. It's not easy to be a teachers it takes almost all of their times just to serve their profession. As a teacher, they have many responsibilities aside from teaching different subjects, they are responsible for the welfare and safety of all their students and they need to be a role model to their students.

In my own opinion the qualities of a great/good teachers are as follows:
1. He/she excellent knowledge in what he/she teach
2. A good listener to his/her students
3. A role model to his/her students
4. Someone who cares for his/her students - Compassion!
5. Sense of humor
6. He/she can understand the needs of his/her students
7. Kindness
8. Respect to co-teachers and students
9. Professionalism in all areas of work

Great teachers treat and love their students as their own children.

 

So I came up with some qualities which I found most relevant for a person involved in a teaching job. I believe if a teacher possesses the following characteristics and qualities, he/she can become a very good teacher with large fan base too.


Friendliness and Congeniality
I think the most important characteristic of a good teacher can have is to be friendly and congenial with his students. It is a plus if his students can share their problems with him, without being afraid or hesitant. I think students have always thoughts of their teachers as their enemies (in a funny sense though). With this mentality, they can never be close to each other, and besides that how many teachers did you like who were NOT friendly, and were rather arrogant and rude?

A Good Personality
A good teacher has a very good personality; there is no second thought about it. Students always get attracted to teachers with good personality which leads to better communication, understanding, and ultimately good results. Everyone can have a good, decent, likable, and presentable personality. Just dress sensibly well, smell good, and be a little gentle and kind. That's all.

Deep Knowledge and a Great Education
Another important characteristic of a good teacher is his knowledge and own education. There is a saying that 'a teacher is only as good as his knowledge is.' After all, he is doing a teacher's job, which is to teach. If he himself lacks in the knowledge of a certain subject that he teaches, he is never going to make a name for himself. So, sign up with only that subjects which you have really good expertise; and it is a moral duty too. Otherwise, it is not worth it.

A Good Communicator
One of the very important characteristics of a good teacher is his communication skills. He should be a very good speaker. This characteristic will provide benefits in several ways. For example:

1. If his communication skills are good, he can convey his lectures with better skill and results.
2. If he is a good speaker, his class strength increases automatically. People love to hear a person who he can speak well enough. There is always a shortage of good speakers in the world

A Good Listener
Apart from being a good communicator, a good teacher should also have the characteristic of being an even better listener. As there is Turkish proverb:

"If speaking is silver; then listening is gold."

Remember, a good listener will always have many friends and fans. Because people do not want to hear every time, they need people who can listen to them as well. And when a good teacher develops this patient quality in himself, he starts to become a great teacher.

A Good Sense of Humor
A good teacher should also have the quality and characteristic of having a good sense of humor. It is a logical fact that a person generally teaches the next generation and as they are younger than the professor, they are expected to have more fun in the class too. So, a good teacher is the one who can keep up with his sense of humor, and with his strong communication skills and personality, can also maintain the discipline of the class.

Kindness
The last but obviously one of the most important characteristics to have in his box of qualities: he should be a gentle, kind, chivalrous, and benevolent person. Students should love him, and when they do love him, they idolize him. Then ultimately, they will respect him, will do the homework, and eventually will bring greater outputs and results
