If it's true that prevention is better than cure, then why do people tend to risk by engaging in unprotected sex hence transmitting HIV/AIDS and other STIs ?

This has been a concern for many years now. No matter how much we stress the importance of safe sex and its benefits, people tend to still go on their way in doing what they want. I have talked to some people who are really sexually active. 5 out of 10 do not use condoms or any contraceptives and the main reason is, it is more pleasurable. Even if they are aware of the risk of getting HIV/AIDS or STDs, they still go with what they want. We live in a free world and we make our own choices. But we also have to bear with the consequences of our actions because it takes only one time to regret your lifetime.

The reason people take such risk is because of their value system. Considering that they know of the risk involved in unprotected sex and still go ahead with it, it means that they prioritize the pleasure they will derive over their safety.

Also, some of the people who take such risk, tend to rely on their luck to keep them from contracting said diseases, even though they will often regret doing so.

Prevention is indeed better than cure, and it has been proven to be so many times already. Unfortunately, many people have this superman tendencies where they think that no matter what they do, nothing serious could happen to them. Others might get HIV, but they surely won't no matter how many times they engage in unprotected sex with strangers. Stupid yes, but I guess this is the defense mechanism these people have, to be able to continue living the way they do. It's not that they lack knowledge, of course they know about the consequences, they just don't want to face it, or consider its possibility.

I have a friend who engage in unprotected sex with strangers he meets online. He knows all the negative things that could happen to him, because well, he's a nurse, and a really good one. We have tried to convince him so many times to undergo the HIV test, but he always gives so many reasons, some rational, mostly not. This made me realize that there is indeed fear, but these people just choose not to mind it.

About twenty or thirty years ago, our knowledge regarding this issue may be very limited due to its sensitivity, but we have gone a long way now. What people must realize is that if it can happen to that person, it could happen to each and every one of us if we don't do something to protect ourselves. I don't think condoms, and having regular check ups and blood tests won't be much of a bother, than just one day realizing that you have now AIDS.
