Laptop for me, especially as portability is key. I love to chill in bed and move around a lot and stuff so a desktop doesn't really suit me. I find it hard enough to sit still normally so in front of a computer for hours is even worse. What's better than sitting in your nice warm bed with a hot drink and your laptop on your chest just browsing the internet?

    I can't think of a lot.

There definitely are good desktops out there without a doubt. But if I had to personally choose between a laptop and desktop. I would definitely chose having a Laptop. Simply because you have the ability to travel with the laptop; whether its simply around the house or abroad. There's less wiring with Laptops and they take up less space. To be honest it definitely depends on what you're going to be using it for.

I have actually used both, and while I thought I needed a laptop for the mobility, turns out the raw power of the desktop is simply way more important than mobility. When I had the laptop, I used to go to my friend's place and play some random free to play games together. We still do that from time to time, I just have to carry the desktop there from time to time, when I stay for more than a day or two. However, having a desktop opened up a whole new world, now we can play all the latest games together and still talk to each other over Skype!

I think having a desktop is better than having a laptop because I work from home. I spend about eight hours a day on the computer and need an office workstation. I have the desktop set up on a desk with an office chair to stay comfortable all day. I like to also have a full keyboard because it makes typing easier. My preference of the desktop is based on my work.

I also have a laptop to use where ever I go. I mostly used my laptop in my bedroom as a television. I take to coffee shops for meetings and to the library to hang out with friends. When I consult a client, it is very convenient to use my laptop to show them what I am talking about. My laptop is a little heavy so I try to do most of my work at home. I love the mobility of the laptop but using the desktop keeps me focused on work.

I prefer desktop computers because in my opinion you can use it for longer hours. Especially if you're a gamer, desktop computer is the best. You can even upgrade parts of your computer for better performance. For laptops, I believe you can only upgrade the memory card.

I like a laptop because of its mobility, really like to use it for the easier of tasks, for example taking notes or browsing the internet. But when I want to play games I still prefer my desktop because it is able to handle the heavier games more easily. Another positive is the price of a desktop, if you have a set budget you will be able to get more out of it if you get a desktop instead of a laptop.

Personally, I like a laptop over a desktop because it's more convenient. I started out using a desktop and then changed.

To decide whether to pick up a laptop or a desktop computer, you have to think about the kind of use you are going to give to it.
In this case, you said it was a general purpose, so I can think that you want if to surf the internet, check your social networks and play videos, which are not heavy tasks.
For you, I would recommend buying a laptop, not only because it is much more portable than a desktop, but because you will not need the power a desktop has to accomplish the tasks you will be doing.

If you want flexibility you should go for a laptop but if you need a computer for programming or rendering you need to get a desktop becouse it is more powerfull than a laptop and it doesn't overheat like a laptop would do.

Laptops and desktops have their good and bad sides. Personally I want to have both. I am a information technology student. Both gadgets will do have a purpose to me. Going out for school I bring my laptop and when I'm in the house I use desktop. As you can notice laptops are not good as desktop when it comes to performance. It may have a weaker specification rather than desktop but its advantage is you can bring it where ever you want but be sure to give it a charge first. Being handy is a good thing most specially when it comes to a surprise activity or anything else. About the desktop, it is really powerful. You can purchase it part by part and upgrade it so it will be good as want you want it to be. The disadvantages of desktop is it is not handy that you can bring everywhere. Consuming a lot of electricity but depends in usage.

Well, I love them both but I think I'll go for laptop since I use it always rather than desktop.

I reckon more people are going for Laptops, as it is used a lot in everyday jobs or doing assignments and also good to carry around and use in a location which has free internet and also, can use it in a internet cafe as well and lightweight. In regards to gaming, you would need to check it can handle the games as with Batman Origins I had to watch a video in youtube to set up the game files as it was not launching and took me some time to sort out as finding the folders can be a challenge at times. I reckon that, they are cheaper at times also can be taken anywhere and also can use it in your house in any room compared to the desktop which cannot be used like that and have to move it around which is time consuming.

I prefer my laptop and would choose a laptop over a desktop any day. Personally I think they are much easier to use and being smaller than a desktop means that I can carry it all over the place. They are also much cheaper and easier to fix in case of an error or problem. But give me a gaming PC and I'll easily change my mind :D

I prefer a desktop. I like the larger screen and how I don't have to hold anything on my lap or put something on a desk/table/etc. Although, I do have a laptop because I admit they are convenient and easy to lug around, while desktops are not. Desktops sometimes also have better screens, resolution and pixel wise. I usually use my laptop if my desktop isn't working or I am traveling somewhere, because I can't bring my desktop of course. :p

For a person who is travelling or has to move to a different place often, a laptop or tablet will be needed so that he or she can work from any location. However for a person who will use the computer for professional reasons, and will not travel often, a desktop will be recommended.

Most of the desktops available today do not have inbuilt wifi or bluetooth, hence if the desktop owner is offline, no one can access the data on the desktop remotely. Though wifi and bluetooth may be disabled in a laptop using Windows, officials are able to access all the information on the laptop remotely using a hidden wifi network and backdoors in the laptop. In some cases, the laptop will be used for identity theft and also hacked remotely.

So a business may find that all their confidential information like sales, profit margin, customer list stored on a laptop will be leaked to their competitor who may be well connected or willing to spend money on corporate espionage. Till laptops without wifi and bluetooth are easily available, businesses and individuals who wish to keep their information confidential will continue to use desktops for their computing needs

For a person who do not do a lot of traveling, a desktop is a viable option. If you are the type who loves to watch online movies or videos, then a big monitor is the way to go. I just cannot imagine myself going online everywhere I go. When I go out of the house, it should be that I want to experience life outside the internet.

I personally use laptops myself. This is due to the fact my living space doesn't really fit a desktop setup. I would love an awesome gaming rig and do a ton of PC gaming, more than I do now, but my living setup doesn't allow me to have a desktop setup so I have to settle for gaming laptops & tablets for my daily drivers. :)

I currently rock a Asus Republic of Gamers G750JZ gaming laptop specc'd out. I bought it last July so it's slightly outdated but can still run anything I've thrown at it recently on mid to high settings, so I am very happy with it. :)

I would go for a desktop as I use it more often for my work. But it all depends on where you use it, for people who travel often a laptop is the best option which cannot be denied and for those who prefer working from home a desktop is better than a laptop. A gaming desktop is a lot stronger and affordable than gaming laptops. Though laptops have the advantage of being able to connect to Wi-Fi, transfer data using Bluetooth and a battery life desktops are beneficial for gamers and content creators.
