Is it really necessary to use a computer mouse with a laptop?

Laptops have this thing called touchpad which works as a mouse, but if you are going to use the laptop for anything except browsing the internet or writing articles, you are going to need a mouse because it's really hard to move precisely with it.

If you intend on gaming on that laptop or doing 3D work I highly suggest getting a mouse, it's a necessity nowadays, hope that answers your question.

It depends on what tasks you are handling. The touchpad can be used in selecting icons and the various commands on the computer screen. It can also be used to perform quick tasks around the computer. The touchpad supports the multi-touch function that the mouse doesn't have which can be helpful in performing certain tasks in the laptop.

The desktop mouse comes in where you want to perform tasks like reading a document and highlight texts or rather a mouse is way efficient in text formatting. Using a scroll button on the mouse is much easier than using two fingers on your touch pad. The mouse also makes game-play much easier than using the laptop's touchpad.

I like to use mouse more than touch pad. As my laptop has the worst touch pad ever made.
I really hate the touch pad of my laptop as it makes simple work much harder to do. And mouse also has better user experience that that of the touch pad. The mouse is also much accurate that of touch pad.
