I hadn't given this much thought until visiting a friend last week. She doesn't have a TV, and I thought it was some phase she was going through (she always had them when we were at college together!). She went on to tell me that she has both Netflix and Amazon Prime, and as such she can whip up a box set to veg out to whenever she pleases, and because she can also do it 'on the go' she doesn't need a TV anymore.

Now, I wasn't exactly unaware of this, but I can't imagine not having a TV!! It's like a vital piece of furniture to me. Anyone else feel the same way?

Yes, I rarely watch TV any more, even DVDs I now watch on the PC. Most of my recreational time is spent on the PC, and I even get my news there now. I think TV is only really enjoyable when watching with others, and I live alone so have no need for one here. I only really watch it at others homes.

The internet has not replaced my television yet but I think the internet will replace television in my home within the next five years. I do spend more time on the internet than watching television. I still enjoy watching marathons of situation comedies on cable. I have not subscribed to Netflix yet but I plan to in the future. When that subscription begins I may cancel cable.

I still have a TV, but I haven't watched regular channels in 7 to 8 years now. If I want to watch a movie, I can either go to the movies or watch it at home. It was really easy for me to stop watching TV too, because if I wanted to see shows, I would have had to wait a few years before they got to my country. I still watch shows as well, but when I want, and without the problems of a normal TV channel.

really the internet replaced my TV. I will forget completely about my TV after i start using my laptop with broadband, I will just immerse myself in the World Wide Web.I used to watch free TV channels through my laptop,And watch movies in YouTube,Hotstar, netflix. And the TV is just an old nostalgia.

I think so because now instead of browsing the TV channels and watching commercials, I rather watch movies from P2P users and not watch commercials. I don't have to say "darn" anymore when a commercial pops up.

As soon as costs come down TV is gone. The quality of web stuff is usually only bad in that they don't have a huge budget. If you go dollar per dollar then web shows are often of comparable quality. The problem is that a web show with a budget of "my free time" can't compete with a million dollar budget.

However as technology improves the production costs of everything is going down a lot. So low budget stuff is getting better and better. I think one area this is very clear is with games. Nearly anyone can make free games on the internet and some are very fun. Drawing takes a little more talent however, so it hasn't taken off as much as games, though it is still easier to draw now that in the past. You don't need an entire studio to produce your own animated video anymore, and there is cg stuff than can make things a lot faster and easier as well.

Of course if you are going to do all hand drawn stuff, that still takes a lot of time.

Overall I don't think there is any reason to stress over your decisions that much. From an art perspective there probably isn't a massive difference between tv or web entertainment. Any skill set you learn from one can probably be applied to the other, so there is likely ample chances to switch between the two. So don't feel like you need to choose one or the other.

In the future it will be important to be flexible and able to adapt to new technologies. So being able to learn something and apply it to new situations is important.

Honestly I agree with your friend for that fact you do not really need a television anymore. Everything is online now, thanks to Peer to Peer technology and other outlets for getting almost anything you will ever need. I can watch my favorite show online at a click of my favorites tab. I also can get the news from www.cnn.com, etc... As of now I see it as a device for connecting your PC and other devices to display a larger image to your family or friends. Most of the people in this era will now us it for a home theater setup in there living rooms.

I think so. Every morning Ill open my Chrome Browser just to load a lot of tabs with my favorite news website.

Movies and shows I'll always watch in my computer, and sometimes, when I go to the TV to watch something, it's usually connected to my computer :D:D:D

There are some news channels that I don't have access trough the Internet (more like specific shows), which I'll still watch trough my Television.

I have had no cable since 2009. We had to decide to keep internet or cable since we could not afford both at the time. We both wanted internet to still be able to game and have access to email and such. It was a good choice. I do not miss cable at all. We subscribe to Netflix. Really anything I want to see can be found online anyways.

I know that I absolutely watch more things on the internet more than the TV. The TV shows that they put on these days aren't as good as some of the things I can see on YouTube. Netflix and Hulu Plus also give you the options to watch the same programs without all those commercials. I love my Netflix account because I can binge watch all the TV shows I want without having to wait for a week until I can continue with the story.

My last tv imploded 8 years ago and since then I never had a new one but for me there's no need for buying a new one anyway. Most of the shows on TV I'm not really interested in and what I am interested in I watch only, either on sites like Youtube or on streams as most of the TV stations stream their program online. Also most TV stations have a big archive of their shows, and if that still isn't enough there are streaming sites like Netflix which get bigger and bigger. I think especially young people don't need an actual TV nowadays anymore. TVs and computer are in the process of merging anyway.

I love watching T.V. but I also love the freedom and variety of things that the Internet has to offer. I believe that the T.V. will always be classified as a stand-a-lone device but be offered with Internet capabilities to those that do not want an extra "bill". I personally use the two together by connecting my laptop to the T.V. to watch a few movies from time to time.

I guess your friend and I would make best mates in that regard... I have no TV either, I used to have it like 5 years back, am glad I sold it and got some pocket change, I don't see the need for one anymore, am so busy online and offline, the TV is the last thing on my mind right now...the internet is the next big thing for me right now!... Its funny how my mom thought I'd never get rid of the TV...I was a junkie, I guess the internet has replaced it... no looking back henceforth. :)

It is true that the internet replaced my television. I actually don't have a television at home. If there is a TV series or a movie that interests me I watch it online. I can can find anything in the internet now a days. I believe there's an application where in you can watch a certain channel on your computer.

I don't find TV that interesting, and spend little time on it. Well, occasionally I met want to watch some vintage 70s sitcom or a classic movie, but that's about it. I get most of my entertainment and worktime from the internet. The entertainment I find on internet forums is often far better than some movie or TV sitcom.

I don't think internet will replace my TV anytime soon. I just like my TV too much. Most of the time when I am in the internet, I find myself watching TV as well.

It is true that nowadays, you can not do anything without internet, but for me, a TV is also a essential part of my house, I can watch videos of YouTube, watch movies in Netflix and much more in my TV, I even can surf the web on it!.
Internet hasn't replaced my TV at all, I still use it and it will remain the same way, not only because it is much more comfortable to use than a laptop or desktop, but because the display is much bigger and better than the one of a computer.
