I have seen many people with a college degree not getting employed in the job sector they have studied, many of them seek employment in fast food restaurants and some remain at home idle. Again statics show that many students are not able to pay their student loans after college.

This makes me have mixed feeling about going to college. What do you guys think, is a college degree worth getting?

It depends on the degree you're going for. The STEM fields are usually decent, but if you're thinking of going for a degree in French Literature, you're probably going to be disappointed once you graduate.

Yes, college degree is very important. If you want to have a successful future you need to get a college degree. It is very hard to get a job without college degree. If you get a college degree you will get a good paying job.

I don't think a college degree is needed for economic success. Nonetheless, college classes can be enjoyable simply for the sake of learning. For instance, if I were a rich auto mechanic with no need of college, I might still enjoy history or music courses.

Anyhow, colleges are graduating way too many telemarketing and restaurant employees. Your typical college graduate expected to get a job with his major only to find there are none. In other cases, the jobs are too far away and the graduate isn't willing to move.

Going to college was the best decision I've ever made. TRUST ME, I definitely know how having a degree may not yield the same results in the job market as it used to - I graduated in 2008 when the economy really turned for the worse. But having a formal education opens you up to the world. You really begin to understand the world we live in, and you're exposed to a ton of new experiences you can only get in college. I met my best friends there, and the education you receive teaches you how to critically think and gives you the opportunity confidence needed to pursue your passions and dreams. Plus, if you went to a public school, you NEED a college education. It sucked when I went, so I know it sucks now. Our educational system is terrible, so to be competitive in a global economy, you need more education.

You mean College Degree as Bachelors Degree right? I can see that there are lots of College Graduates who are unemployed and most of them end up as waiter/waitress on bars or restaurants. College Degree is not enough if we really want a permanent and stable job. Go on, go higher! Be educated at a higher level.

What I am talking about is not to stop learning. When we finish our Bachelors Degree, there is no certainty that we would have a stable job. We must continue our education and go for Masters Degree. This is one way we can battle up with unemployment, the more knowledge we have then the more chance we would be employed. Finishing our Masters Degree is not enough, we must go for Doctors Degree and even Post Doctors Degree. Being on a graduate school really helps the level and quality of our life.

I think it would depend on what type of career you want to pursue. Obviously, you need the piece of paper for some fields, and for others it will definitely be preferred, but for some careers it isn't necessary. Think about it, a lot of people go to college when they are 17 or 18. I don't know about you, but I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life at that age. And if you are just going to college because you feel that it's expected of you, maybe you should save yourself a lot of money by not pursuing it until you understand what you really want to do with your life.

First, you have to see education as a gift to yourself and not a tool to getting what you want or need in life. A lot of people "succeed" without a degree but sometime later in life, wish they did because nothing can fill its place. Get a degree in your field of interest (no matter which it is). develop your skills because that is what makes you employable- people don't employ degree, they employ the holder of the degree, so as the holder, develop yourself to be better than your degree (with your degree and not without it).

I know that your college degree is more than worth it.Because even though you may not get a job in the field of your degree you may end up landing a job that pays more money than the degree field you wen to school for.

It's simply impossible to say yes or no. A degree in engineering from Oxford is going to be worth it, a degree in Media Studies from the University of East London is not going to be worth the tuition fees. However, there are simply too many people going to college, and people have over inflated expectations once leaving. I didn't gain a degree and I've no regrets in taking the path into a driving career.

Though a college degree helps many people jumpstart their careers, there had been special cases where a person who have a College degree achieve nothing while a person who lack education became rich and successful because of a certain kind intelligence you won’t learn in school and that kind of intelligence is called street smarts. I know a certain Millionaire who never graduated Elementary but she is able to build a business empire from a small capital of 100 dollars. Then I know someone who is a MENSA member and a University Graduate who is currently living on his parent’s basement.

From what I've understood, a college degree means that you can work. Not in the sense of a job, but in the sense that he can work to better himself and doesn't run away from tasks or give up. With the power of the internet, you can pretty much become an expert in anything, but having an actual degree means you've put in the work to get that degree, and I think employers like to see that, to know they aren't wasting their time with hiring some random people.

A college degree is worth it. To be successful you must have a college degree. You must also have a degree in an area that you know it will be useful. I personally believe that a college degree is also about the experience. You get to learn how to become an adult when going off to college.

Here in the Philippines, being a degree holder in college is definitely an issue. Most of the high paying jobs here in the Philippines requires college degree especially those supervisory and managerial level, therefore, I presume that, "college degree is worth it!" Not just because of the diploma or title that you have graduated in college but it is the learning that you've gain which is more advance than the secondary level of education.

There is a quote from an anonymous author, "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance". Every opportunity to educate yourself helps you to become more well rounded in all aspects of your life.

I really believe it depends on what you want to do. I am a firm believer that if you don't enjoy your job, it can make your life miserable. Miserable at work = miserable at home.

I am a nurse and I love it. I can't imagine doing anything else and wouldn't want to. In order to be a nurse, I needed a college degree. I guess for me it was an easy decision.

I have a friend who decided not to go to college. He was able to get a job with a local railroad company. He absolutely loves it, makes more money than I do and doesn't have the student loans to pay off!

If you want a traditional career a college degree is very necessary. When I say traditional career I mean like doctor, lawyer, teacher, nurse, accountant, etc. If you don't have a clue on what you want to do try to do job shadowing before you start classes because you don't want to waste money. I been in the place where I kept changing my major and it is exhausting so just try to look into different careers before you waste time and money.

I would say it depends on a ton of factors. When looking for a certain job, you may see a requirement that states you need a certain level of education such as a Degree. This makes people feel as if they need to go to college and obtain this piece of certification because they are basically guaranteed to get the job, correct!

Not all of the times this is true because you have more questions and requirements stating that you have had to have previous expirience in that particular field for normally 2 years. Some such as myself would be like this is my first job, but I do have the experience, companies might consider this but most likely they want to see a strong background of work you've completed in the past. A degree is a great asset to have because when more opportunities come about, you'll have that certification stating that you completed all of these classes in order to achieve your goal. The value to get a degree may be high in price but over the course of your career, it'll be well worth it, though I also understand that finding a job can be hard either way.

This is a very hot topic these days. I think college is a great thing if the student is going into a field where there is need for more workers. The problem is that many students are pushed to go to college and find a subject they are interested in and get a degree. Colleges do not offer much information about job prospects after graduation. Many students have no idea that the field they are considering has few job openings and many, many people seeking to enter that field.

I would not want to discourage someone from getting a college education and pursuing the career of their dreams, but I would encourage anyone who is not sure what they want to do to not go to college yet, but to find a job and get some work experience. Then they can learn about the work environment and consider what their skills and interests are as well as get a better idea of what the job market is like and what degree or technical training would be most beneficial to them. While they are working, they are not only earning money to help contribute to their household and save for college should they choose to go, they are learning practical work skills that will likely prove far more valuable than anything they learned in a classroom.

Definitely! There are a lot of high earning jobs that requires a college degree. I do believe that with education your chances of getting a very good future is high. If you have the means to get a maste'rs degree much better! I thought about getting a master's when I was younger but it is not easy working and studying at the same time so I decided against it.

Yes, it is. View it like acquiring an upgrade on your weapons. You might not use it when you get to the battlefield or you might just only be okay using the lower grade weapons but it secures your win or gives you a better fighting chance against the odds. Maybe having a college degree might not come necessary in the future but it still coming short.
