Diabetes is a chronic condition, affecting many people globally. There are two main types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Type 2 is the most common type, and it comes about due to poor lifestyle. Research has shown that proper choice of diet and good exercise regime can collectively assist in reversing the situation.

With the emergence of health education programs in most hospitals worldwide, many diabetic patients are much aware of what they should eat in plenty, what they should eat in small portions, and definitely what they should avoid eating.

From the common knowledge that many people have, it is well understood that too many sugary foods worsen diabetic conditions. Therefore, diabetic patients are advised to avoid such foods. On the other hand, health practitioners usually recommend plenty intake of fruits and vegetables. The essence here is that fruits and vegetables contain ascorbic acid, which activates insulin.

Diabetic patients should also eat whole meal carbohydrate foods, instead of simple sugars. The reason is that for wholemeal or complex carbohydrate foods, sugars are released slowly into the blood.

Foods are of different varieties in different parts of the world due to varied ecological conditions. In my region, diabetic patients usually eat fruit such as oranges, lemons, pawpaw, passion fruit, bananas, and guava. They also eat carbohydrates like brown rice, brown bread, cassavas, potatoes, and yams.

Since we come from different parts of the globe, what do diabetic patients in your region eat? Are there any restrictions on some foods?

I follow the eating regimen of high fat and low carbs with the belief that anything that contains carbs will eventually convert to sugar in the body, regardless of how long it takes. To me, sugar is bad in all forms and that includes complex carbs. Before I started eating this way, I found some old books that were published in the United States in the 1920s. Back then doctor's treated diabetes by getting their patients off anything that was sugary or converted to sugar and that included carbs.

Sometime in the 1960s, in the United States, we started to hear the message that we needed carbs in our diet. Well, it's been more than 50 years of this and what have been the results? The United States is facing a health crisis it has never faced before. If a high carb and low fat diet is supposed to be so beneficial, wouldn't it stand to reason we would see a drop in diseases such as diabetes and obesity based on dietary recommendations? The truth is things have only gotten worse and it's because what we've been told to eat has been wrong for decades.

I could say diabetes is one of the worst sickness one could have. I may be wrong but i could say that it's the worst am experiencing around me being that a loved one is involved. Its quite tiring to always be on the check out to know if the sugar level is high or low and more crazier that this sickness can't just go away permanently.

Doctors always advice that they should engage in excercise often and also reduce intake of carbohydrates. Where I come from the food usually taken by these patients are fruits and vegetables. Vegetables include spinach, cabbage, pumpkin, greeen amarantus and so on. Although, I can't say for all fruits because the patient i take care of is quite choosy. Fruits like pine apple, watermelon, banana contains sugar and increases his sugar level but can comfortably take garden egg, cucumber and unripe paw paw. Foods that contain iron like unripe plantain is also allowed. The back of the unripe plantain is grounded into flour to be used as swallow.

However, I believe foods may differ with regards to location and the type of diabetes too. I would love to know more about these foods so as to be sure that am on the right track. Please feel free to correct me if I mentioned a wrong food as I don't want to put a loved one in danger.

Diabetes is a condition you can actually manage through good eating habits . What I mean is that you must accept that you have it and start meals that are assigned to you by the health practisioner . These diets are which are sugar free meals , whole grain cereals , vegetables and proteins . You must actually forbid eating refined foods and start eating natural food

I saw my dad use honey instead of sugar for his food and drinks. I prefer honey as a substitute for sugar because it's healthy. Sugar has a bad factors for our health. My dad has a diabetes and he's avoiding sugar as much as he can. I don't want to develop diabetes that's why I prefer healthy foods like honey. Honey is a natural sweetener and it acts almost the same like sugar. It's rich in antioxidants. There's some other benefits of using honey like it keeps your weight management and boosts the immune system as well.

People with diabetes eat small portions of each type of food at each meal. They must have vegetables in their meal and a fruit. They should not take their tea with sugar but honey is allowed but not too often.

Light carbohydrates like potatoes, white rice and white bread should not be included in their meals. These should be replaced by brown rice, brown bread, sweet potatoes, arrowroots and unripe bananas.
They should not eat alot of meat once but can have 5-8 pieces.

Most importantly, they should monitor their weight and blood pressure at home if possible of go for regular clinic checkup and adhere to doctors instructions.
