When we talk of great artists, what do we mean by that? Is our understanding of greatness based solely on the immortality of their names or their apparition in pop culture? How are we rating beauty and emotional power?

This isn't the sort of debate that puts Renaissance artists against Postmodern ones. While we understand the importance of skill and hard work, how can we really see when those things are being put to practice? When talent is innate, do we rate the work differently? When things appeal to our aesthetic desires but mean absolutely nothing, is there a different method of evaluating its impact?

I realize I'm being all over the place with this thread. There's a lot to work with! Fundamentally, I want to know if you believe that all arts (plastic or not) should be studied equally and even rated at all. How should we talk about and treat art?

Yes, if you choose what you rate it for. For example, a lot of famous artists form classics have bad anatomy. As an artist myself, I see the faults and can rate the piece based on the skill alone, not the artist and name behind it.
Of course, nobody can deny how much previous generations made for art in general, therefore a lot of people in music, art and literature called classics. yet, the writers half the time have the worst books I've read in my life, thanks to school program insisting on the classics to be read by young weak minds.

I do not believe in talent being innate, it is boiled down to practice hours. there are exceptional qualities that make some people learn faster, but they rarely are born with them, those talents are acquired form other repeated tasks, that are not art related. I feel really strongly about it and low key hate people, who dare to say "ahh, you are so talented, i wish I could draw/sing/write like you!". The thing is, you can, if you put as much dedication and practice on a regular basis, as I did. sometimes less, sometimes more. Do not tell me I am born with it, I might get physical:mad::confused::p

You are all over the place, yeah. Please, decide what specifically you want to know, or make a list of questions you want to be answered. My logical part of the brain would prefer some order :D
