Social media has become a significant part of many individuals’ lives. Users’ posts vary from inspiration and news to complaints and family photos. Many users post things they don’t think will be seen by anyone not on their friends’ list, but their privacy settings are open enough that their profiles are seen by anyone who looks up their names.

Many companies have started searching prospective employees’ social media accounts to gain a better understanding of them as people and employees. This search of users’ posts can be both beneficial and detrimental to their job prospects. For example, if prospective employees complain about the companies they work for or post about their drug use, a company interviewing them may determine that it does not want to employ these individuals based on their posts.

Should companies search their prospective employees’ social media accounts to determine if they should be hired?

In my opinion I would be against this because social life and professional life are two different entities. What one may be doing in their individual life should be of least concern to their bosses. I feel like prying on someone's social media platform is a breach of privacy and should be condemned by all means possible.

I don't think companies should review potential employee's social presence, but we all know that they do and will continue to.

I am a contractor and I personally do not post or re-post anything that anyone would think is offensive. My posts are usually family on FaceBook and business on Twitter.

It is easy to avoid being "flagged" by a company that is searching a potential employee's social presence - set the account privacy so nobody except friends can review it. I did that long ago and haven't had a problem since.
