If you like music, I have good news: A recent study by the British Mindlab organization - focused on research on the impact of communication on our brain - concluded that some types of music stimulate the memorization and assimilation of content we study.

Already another study by the University of Caen in France has ensured that students who studied mathematics listening to classical music had a retention and a concentration increase of around 12% compared to those who did not listen to music during the studies.

    CHOOSING THE STYLE

In addition to being a way to relieve tension, listening to music during study time also helps the student to improve the absorption capacity of the content. However, to achieve an effective result you have to select your style.

    • Sounds of nature

Studies say that songs that bring in natural elements such as bird songs, forest sounds or rain sounds, for example, improve student focus and make them less tense. In addition, natural sounds increase cognitive functioning, optimize concentration, and increase overall satisfaction.

    • Classic music

Classic music, on the other hand, helps keep the pace of studies longer, retain and categorize information better. So, if you are listening to a classical background music, preferably the Baroque one, which has as main composers Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Mozart and Beethoven, your studies will be more productive and will last longer.

Do you listen to music while you study? If so, comment on which ones you listen to.

Yeah, definitely. Music helps me zero in my focus towards what I want to get done because it shuts out all background noise and distractions. I say, songs with no vocals tend to help better because I don't have the urge to sing along with the song however, I find that calmer, softer-toned songs will actually help me do my work faster and more efficiently. My personal favorite album to listen to while doing work is Daniel Caesar's Freudian. I find that his soothing voice helps me achieve a clearer state of mind.

Definitely. Somehow I find it more relaxing than when I am studying without listening to music. It's like it gives me the best environment to do my studies and it doesn't affect me one bit.

Yes, definitely. I'm actually a college student and every time I study for the exams, I always listen to music. Some of the genres I listen to are Ballads, Pop, and Hip-Hop. It actually depends on my mood. If I feel very energetic I listen to Hip-Hop and Pop, but when I feel a little gloomy I listen to Ballads. Just like @Milay music also gives me the best environment to do my studies, and unlike others who always love to study on the library because they don't want noise, I love noise and noise makes my brain work faster and competitive.

Actually, I agree with the entire article. I don't love classical music but when I do feel like listening to some, I easily memorize what I'm studying. However, I'm a moody person that's why I don't only listen to one genre of music. I always prefer to shuffle my playlist.

I never used to as I was in a boarding school in high school with strict rules so there was no way for me to study with music while in school. However now in university I cannot function without tge music. I just feel like it's too quiet and I can't focus.

So yeah, I listen to music while studying and I listen to a lot of music genres. From rock to reggae and everything in between.

I have been a music maniac since I was 11. Whether it is romantic music with slow tunes, or some upbeat rock, or some high volt EDM, I love it all. I don't have a particular taste. I used to listen to music while studying regularly. I am a scientist now, and I still listen to ambient music while reading books in my free time.

I usually prefer to listen ambient music or rain sounds during reading. I have found by personal experience that songs with lyrics may distract you. Ambient music however, increases attention & focus, and helps you concentrate better. I play ambient music or rain sounds on full volume in my study room or lab and get busy. I don't feel overwhelmed by the time I spend doing my work and feel good and energetic too.

Whenever any of my students ask me a solution for bad focus and lack of concentration, I suggest music therapy to them too. (Yes, it's basically like a therapy for mind!)

Can't agree with this study report more! I have been using ambient sounds (sounds of nature) now for almost 15 years. It is calm and soothing. Not aggressive and builds pleasantness around you. The more pleasant and positive you feel, the more your personality beams!

It depends on what I'm studying. When I'm learning something that requires my full attention I do not listen to music, but when I'm drafting an engineering drawing, or doing maths I love listening to instrumental music in the background, it helps me to focus and gives me comfort. But music with lyrics or too loud music has the exact opposite effect on me while I'm studying, it simply distracts me and makes me shallow.

As a student i really do enjoy listening to music while studying and it would really help me to concentrate more, like when our teacher told us to study a certain chapter in our book, i immediately would grab my phone and listen to solemn music and as i listen to it the rhythm and the flow of music would eventually flow within me through my heart that would make me learn more easily, from what i read and also while i listen to music i could recall and understand what i am reading or studying because as we all say music is the food for our soul.

Hi there Tiago.I enjoy listening to music everyday. On average I spend 2/3 hours daily listening to some of my favorite music genres and artists.Even though I simply love listening to music I just can't listen to music while I'm studying. When I study I need full concentration as well as piece so I can remember everything that I red and be ready for the exam. While listening to music and studying at the same time,I just can't be focused enough.

I like what you have posted and I do agree with the statement that sounds of nature and classical music help concentration and lead to better memory. This study isn't something that I have come across before, but I can definitely see it as being true, just from my own experience. It's very enjoyable to listen to sounds from nature at any time, and the same can be said about classical music, so I do that from time to time when I'm studying too. However, any type of harsher music needs to be put on hold while I'm reading or memorizing something, because it really hinders my concentration efforts.

For most people I've noticed that music will help them focus better but I'm the complete opposite. I get easily distracted either by the actual music or by flipping through my playlist to find a song I want to hear. I need silence so my brain can register what I'm trying to learn otherwise I feel flustered. Usually I don't want to be studying in the first place so I'm sure that doesn't help my case at all.

Music is relaxing and all that, but I don't understand how people study while listening to music. I have tried that so many times but I always end up singing along or even standing up to dance and forget that I was studying. So for me it is a no. Music works best for me when I'm going about my chores or just in bed resting.

I don't listen to music when I am studying. Because it takes away my focus because when I listen to music I sing along so that would be a disturbance when I study. For me, you should avoid unnecessary noises when studying because it splits your attention into two. Studying should be accompanied with silence and focus. So that you's remember what you read and you can focus and comprehend more.

I enjoy listening to music when I'm studying. I particularly like song that are more instrumental and less lyrical. When I'm studying I normally listen to "Two Steps from Hell" they are a music company who make intense music.

A couple of my personal favorite songs from Two Steps from Hell include "Heart of Courage", "Dragon Rider", and "Black Blade".

I love soothing music while I study. It brings about that calmness. In other cases some music may be destructive since you may find your mind carried away. Music through the earphones is much better compared to music through the speakers.

Certainly not, whenever am studying I can't pay attention to anything else, not even music because I always get distracted and then I can't pay full attention to what am studying. So I prefer absolute silence in my studying environment. At the same time, studying might also get boring. So in situations like that maybe a little music might help, but it does more harm than good to me as long as studying is concerned.

To me, this is a no as I have come to realize that listening to music while I read has not really made me achieved anything as it takes my mind off what I am reading which is not the plan that I always have when I set out to read. I am the type of person that has grown up to enjoy reading in a quiet environment and music is going to be like a noise to my ear when I decide that it is always good that I read while it is playing.

I cannot even read while my neighbour is playing music in the next room and that was the reason I decided to always go to the library while I was at school since it is one of the best places that I enjoyed taking out my time to study.

I usually love a cool quite environment all the time when am studying. I just can't concentrate in my books while music is playing even though I love music a lot. Whenever I try to study while music is playing I just end up listening to music and forget about my books.
