Like RecoverAll mentioned, there are so many brilliant producers, actors, and people involved in cinema all around the world, not just in English speaking countries, so it would be a waste to not at least give them a shot. I come from a smaller country, so from an early age I've become really accustomed to watching movies in a foreign language. Dubbing annoys me a lot, because so much of the emotion of the actors is lost, so subtitles are a great way to understand the movie and still get to enjoy it to the fullest.

I do not see the fun of watching foreign movies with subtitles. It is pretty tiresome since you have to read the subtitles before they disappear and also catch a glance on the scene.

I think this leads to one not appreciating the movie. Mostly I end up dead asleep and I feel wasted. I would rather watch movies with the languages I understand or look for a translated copy.

I do! I like seeing stories from cultures that aren't my own.

One of my favorite directors from any country is Park Chan-wook. His filmography includes Oldboy and most recently, The Handmaiden.

I find it more interesting when a movie comes with subtitles. They add up more of the content and helps to relay the message of the movie to the viewers. Not all people have a good quality of speakers to use while watching a movie and they may have a hard time understanding it especially thos movies with whispering scenes. That is why subtitles are making movies easier to watcha nd understand. It is a big help for me.

When we compare word pickup quality in the translation, original have great. As I preferred, watching a foreign movie of Japanese, Korean, other East Asian. I watch in original audio with subs then, translate. In the dubbed, movie or series voice actor only consider with the mouth moment word and most of the expression are gone with it.

I watch many foreign movies and shows subtitled. In fact, for a while I watched foreign subtitled content so much that now I prefer English content subtitled too, even though that is my native language. I find that it helped improve my reading speed and comprehension, but my listening comprehension may have gone down a little too. It also helped me learn a little bit in a few other languages, including French, Japanese and Korean.

I agree and disagree with many people in this thread! In my opinion, foreign movies can be some of the best. Without American constraints and popular tropes, I believe we as people can learn to appreciate different forms of media and different cultures just through watching something people of a different region have created with their original ideas.

Some people might just want to watch it dubbed, which I can understand! If you have a slower reading speed, a headache, or want to lay on your side while watching something, it's completely understandable. Otherwise, though, subtitles are the way to go. With the original actors' expressions and voice being heard, the intent and aesthetic of the film's elements can be appreciated the way they were meant to be since the creation of the film. Subtitles can also help you learn the language the film is in (as a quick tip)!

I don’t find it enjoyable to watch movies with subtitles. I want to understand the story in its full length, follow the sequences, important details included. I need to observe the characters and roles they’re depicting. My interpretation/ catharsis would be diminished if subtitles appear in every scene. They always distract me. I get out of focus.

However, on afterthought, there may have been parts of the dialogue which were not clearly audible to me. This is where subtitles could be useful. That is if I’m watching movies at home. In addition, my vocabulary and grammar could still improve. But why would I watch movies in the first place? To enjoy right? I’d still prefer movies without subtitles and are dubbed in English (if other foreign languages).

I totally do not enjoy foreign movies with subtitles. I find it very tiresome following up a movie which isn't in English. For two main reasons.
    a) I will have to concentrate more on reading the subtitles and miss out on the action in the movie.
    b) In some instances the actor's speech pace may be too fast hence its possible to miss some crucial things in the movie.

I remember when Money Heist was released (in Spanish) ,I found it so hard watching it though it is one of the best TV series this year. Until recently when I got the English version of the series.
