Some people might say it helps better focus on details, but I find that it does the exact opposite. I can't concentrate at all whilst reading and listening to music, which is why I prefer to cease doing the latter. But this is just me, and nobody should take my experience for granted. Not rarely have I seen people in the bus, train or plane read and listen to music at the same time, and they seem to be quite happy.
In fact, I asked a specific individual if he could focus on details, and he nodded in approval, saying that not listening to music whilst reading and vice-versa doesn't bring any fruition whatsoever.

I often use an addon called streamus in web browser to listen to music when I am reading online. I rarely if ever listen to music when I am trying to read a book. It gets to be to distracting. The exception being instrumental music. I think it is the words that distract me. I end up focusing on the song lyrics rather than what I'm reading. This is why instrumental music is less of a problem for me.

I can listen to music while reading but it has to be instrumental music. One problem I have listening to music with words is my attention focuses on the words, and it's hard to really focus on anything else at the time. I passed and failed many college courses due to listening to music with words and without words.

I can't stand to have any kind of noise or distraction on while I'm reading. I like to visualize the imagery and voices in my head so I feel like it takes me away from the world I am reading about. I could see how some people could like it though. I guess it all depends how distracted it will make you> I've never tried instrumental music but am sure it could help the moods of some scenes in books. For me though I will just stick to silence. Some of my friends actually read with TV or movies on which I think is incredible. Books were never meant to be an auditory experience in their original form.

I used to try and listen to music when I read but I love music so much that I get really distracted really quickly. I end up listening to the music instead of paying attention to what Im reading.

I agree with you, wvborder! I am the type of person who has to read every word, and if I think I've missed something, I'll go back and read it again. If I have music playing, it is way too much of a distraction, and my reading will take twice as long. If the music is instrumental, it is less of a bother, and I can live with it. But I prefer to go somewhere very quiet when I read. My husband speed reads, and that just drives me crazy! I would be afraid I would miss way too much of the story.

I do not listen to music while reading, simply because it would distract me and I might start thinking about the lyrics rather than the book I am reading. I also find that I can can get through more pages when I am reading without any distractions or outside annoyances. I have a reading nook near my living room so it is very easy for me to read silently. On the other hand, I do like audio books that feature a bit of music.

Yes, I do listen to music while reading. It seems it is helping me understanding more what I am reading. However, I prefer music that soothes and calm, like Classics, Instrumentals, Inspirational. Soothing music helps me relax and when I am relax perform better.
Not only do listen to music when reading but also doing other task or chores at home or at work. I would say that I do not strickly listen to smooth music, I somethimes listen to Rock music when I read only if is Slow Rock.

I listen to music while doing... anything. I just need some kind of background to fulfill the awkward silence. Sometimes, it doesn't even have to be music, although it mostly is. I don't even know if it keeps me more focused or more relaxed, it's kind of like a weird combination of both. I don't read too much, but when I do, the silence is kinda not fitting for me. I need to listen to something really fitting to the theme of the book, the comic, or anything else really. But even when it doesn't fit, it does it's job to keep me focused/relaxed.

I never listen to music when I read. I think it's awfully hard to read with music in the background. It's easy for me to concentrate, even if 30 people talk in the background, but with music, I simply can't concentrate.
I actually usually don't listen to music, but when I do, I always listen to the same song! It's my favorite song of all times. It's relaxing and I can even play it on the piano.

I'm with you @Cierra, it's distracting and makes it much harder to understand the book or whatever I'm reading.
People are different and that's how it should be!

Reading and listening to music are both my hobbies, and it doesn't bother me at all to carry out two at the same time. I would sit on my couch with books on my hand and plop an earphone to my ears and that would be a prefect day. I like the feelings where you feel like you are in your own world. Listening to the music while reading helps me to get into the story and to go on an adventure (I usually read crime or adventurous novels ).

Listening to music while reading to me, is just trouble. When you read, you need quiet to imagine what your reading. People go in a room with some coffee and read, it's relaxing. When you listen to music you get unfocused, you start singing or dancing. You probably won't even remember what you read if you listened to music.

Listening to music while studying has often become a great way for memorization and relaxing while taking on the work load. Some people do see it as a distraction while others use music as a studying tool. Several of my classmates usually make songs or raps out of the chemistry work and the AP united states history work because it helps them remember. When it comes to down to me, I use music as both a distraction and a studying tool depending on the current situation.
