I prefer to watch movies with subtitles. I do understand english language pretty good, but still it is easier for me to watch a movie subtitled in my native language. It is easier for me to follow the movie. There are some specific expressions that every language has which you may not understand if it's not your native language. Also accents in the movies are different, some are harder to understand and some are easier.
Watching movies with subtitles is a great way to learn new language.
So, to sum up, I generally just feel more comfortable to watch a movie with a subtitle, although I can easily watch almost any movie on english language without subtitle.

I prefer watching with subtitles because it makes me understand the words and lines better. I once watched a movie without subtitles and it ended up with me not knowing any of the characters and barely understanding the plot. Also, I often watch Japanese movies and anime so it is essential that I have subtitles because I am not from Japan. I could understand bits and pieces of the words after 14 years of constant watching but the experience and breadth of understanding is different unless the movie has subtitles.

It's fine for me to watch without subtitles, but I prefer to watch with it. I don't have good listening skills and I probably have hearing problems. Watching with subtitles help me to understand the movie more at is allows me to read what I wasn't able to hear or what I heard but was unclear to me. I also watch anime and that is one reason why I am used to having subtitles when watching.

Subtitles are of great help to everyone, for me, I use it occasionally. It depends on the movie or TV series that I'm watching. I turn the subtitles on when I watch Asian dramas, especially Korean Dramas and Chinese Dramas. It would be hard if I don't turn them on, of course. In some American TV shows or movies, I prefer not having subtitles because it keeps me focused. I would love to view a movie or a TV show in English without something popping out from the bottom that makes me involuntarily read. However, if the show that I'm viewing is Science Fiction, I prefer turning the subtitles on. It is because, there are a lot of terms that makes me want to say to the character, "English please".

I don't really abhor subtitles, and I didn't reach to the point where I become annoyed because of it. If subtitles are there originally with the movie and can't be turned off, I just shrug it off and enjoy the movie. After all, that's what we came for, to enjoy that form of entertainment

Oh my gosh, yes I love watching everything with subtitles. So it started off as me putting on subtitles while I ate food. After a long while I left the subtitle setting on and never went back. When I watch movies with my family, they do not let my leave the subtitles on. Now it is so weird for me to watch something without subtitles and I hate it.

I think that I have some audio processing problems as well. If I don't have subtitles on, I have no idea what's being said half of the time. It's helpful that I am a fast reader. I usually just skim the subtitles so that I'm not so focused on trying to read what's being said the whole time. But I can understand how they can be distracting to someone who doesn't read very fast. I do wish the pacing of the subtitles fit what was being said better though, especially during dramatic pauses - sometimes, I end up getting slight spoilers from the subtitles!

I only watched movies with subtitles when they are from foreign countries and they are not using English. Subtitles makes me understand more about the movie I have watch. But with English movies I can watch without subs, I am training my ears to understand them to improve my listening skills as well as to enhance my English too.

Watching a movie with subtitles is distracting to me, especially when the movie or television series is already in a language I understand. It is more like multitasking.

The last Tv shows I watched with subtitles are Narcos and Narcos Mexico because there is too much Spanish going on in addition to sparsely populated English.

I am an English speaker and if the movie is in English, then I don't need to watch the subtitled version. If it is a Korean or Chinese movie, then I have no choice but to watch the subtitled version.Generally, I find myself multitasking when watching subtitled movies. The more reason I stick with English movies.

I would rather watch a movie without subtitles if I could; I read very fast so, sometimes, the element of surprise is lost on me. There are scenes where that one last word is a twist or a climactic point, but because I've already read the word from the subtitles, the emotional impact is dampened once the actor says the word. It's like getting spoilers one or two seconds in advance. Unfortunately, my hearing is terrible, so there are movies that I failed to appreciate before I rewatched them with subtitles. A perfect example of this is The Dark Knight. I first watched it in the cinema without subtitles, and I could not understand why people were raving about it. I thought it was a big, dark bore! Months later, I bought a BluRay copy of the movie and watched it again, this time with subtitles. It was only then that I understood just how deep and beautiful the movie was.

I always want to have subtitled whenever I watch movies because sometimes it’s hard to understand some actors/actress maybe because of their accent, so I just look at the subtitle to understand clearly whatever they say... and specially when I am watching a Korean series or movie.

I always watch movies with subtitles because I get to enjoy the movie more. I can understand what they are saying and doing. Although, understand English well, some speaker's voice is too low for me to hear and I couldn't understand it. It also improves my speed in reading, so I definitely prefer watching movies with subtitle.

I may assess that I learned English mainly trough movies, videos and other media of this kind. I begun with English with subtitles in my language, but I found it really ineffective (your brain get really lazy and you will not really pay attention to the dialogues). I soon switched to English subs and I found myself often forced to stop the video to find a word I don’t know, it helped but still I needed subtitles to see anything in English (mainly for the different accent you may encounter). Probably is a phase you have to experience until you are confident of your ability to understand basic conversations and recognize common words.

Watching movies without subs was the best decision ever, though really frustrating at the beginning it may improve your understanding of any language within few months. That doesn’t mean you’ll be able to speak or write it properly but it will definitely make your life easy if you have to hear it often or for work!

I always watch a movie with subtitles may it be English especially in other language but not in my mother tongue because I am perfectly fluent in it. Sometimes, even though I perfectly understand the English language, we all have different accent and way to say a word. I can't understand what they're saying because of their saying a few times and having a subtitle will help me to learn some accents.

Some people will hate to watch a movie with subtitles because they are distracting according to the replies of this thread, but I already trained myself and used to multitask of having a subtitle while watching a movie. Especially while watching Korean, Thai, or Hindi videos. I'm so used to it to the point that it will feel weird not to have subtitle in every video.

I don't like watching movies with subtitles. This is because you may try to follow up the subtitles and forget to follow the acted part. Of which the flow of the movie may not be that deep inside you.

Though at some point movies acted in languages you don't understand ( like the Thailand and Hindi movies which are not of my native language) one may be forced by the circumstance to have the subtitles on them.

I prefer watching while using subtitles. I personally want to have broader knowledge when it comes to vocabulary. Different accents also contributes to a better understanding of the viewers. There are also some movies that doesn't have clearer audios.

I think watching movie without subtitles will be helpful to enhance listening skills especially if it is English.

Depends I like to have subtitles on because if I miss an important word it will show in the subtitles any ways. And if I see something in a language I don't speak then naturally I would have subtitles on it. Some movies don't need subtitles and if it's in my native language it's not nessessary to have subtitles on because I will understand everything anyways. But subtitles it great and it helps with getting a feel for new languages as well.

In my noisy household, subtitles are a must have for me or else I end up missing important parts of the movie. I still prefer subtitles, though, whether I'm in a loud area or not. They're just really comforting to have, if that makes any sense.

I watch movies with subtitles. Yeah, sometimes it's annoying because it's on the screen, but if my children are being too loud then I can still understand what is going on. Sometimes the character in the movie is talking too low or they have a specific accent and the subtitles really help me understand what is being said. I hate having to rewind a million times.
