Most people use search engines because they probably do not remember some information offhand. This is what researchers call the “Google effect,” the likelihood of forgetting information you could quickly search for on the Internet. The condition was revealed in a 2011 study by researchers Betsy Sparrow, Jenny Liu, and Daniel Wegner.

The researchers found that people often considered checking the Internet whenever they were asked questions they could not answer. They were also likelier to forget information if they knew it would be available somewhere—even if it was not the Internet.

I find this scary, what do you think? How often do you use search engines?

I definitely agree with this. Having access to information at any moment indirectly communicates to us that we don’t really need to remember anything. This is also affecting education. For example, young children today will not see the purpose of learning their multiplication tables, since you can “just ask Google.” I find this reality quite sad and think the internet is making us progressively stupider rather than being used as a tool to increase intelligence and innovation in the world.
