So gender and sex are often said to be two different things. Sex is biological, whereas gender is more of a social construct that is assigned to members of each sex. A person's gender identity is then how they relate to this social construct, how they see themselves in this dynamic, and how they express themselves in relation to gender norms and aesthetics.

However while there is some variation we cannot deny that gender and biological sex are intrinsically related. The correlation between biological sex and gender is something on the order of 0.98 or more, and between gender and sexual orientation, there is a correlation of at least 0.95. mean that for example of people born with penises >99% of them will call themselves men and >95% of them will be attracted to women. With such strong correlations it would be wrong to say that sex, gender, and sexual orientation are all very related to one another despite what gender activists might like to imply, that it is all just social construct.

In my opinion there are only two genders despite what PC warriors like to say. Most transgender people are also part of this binary, they simply want to be the other gender. That said there is a sort of spectrum regarding what is masculine and what is feminine, that is there are masculine women and feminine men, but there is no such thing as a third gender or o someone with no gender or whatever nonsense snowflake types are comming up nowadays.

I totally agree with you @QuickSilverD. There are only two sexes and genders. The gays, lesbians and transgender types are more so a sexual orientation.

Ian McKellen, for example, made a comment, "One of the reasons I
proselytise, talk about being gay, is because I don’t want today’s children not to enjoy their sexuality, be aware of it, think about it, puzzle about it, discuss it and have it out in the open. Because of course, it’s central to what you are.”

I pulled up the list of the 31 genders you can't discriminate against in New York. I was going to break it down but we've got stuff like separating Female to Male and FTM, Gender Blender and Gender Bender, and lesbian 'types' like Femme and Butch. Plus at least five other ways of just saying 'transexual'. My favorite is 'Person of Transgender Experience', which practically sounds like resume BSing.

I dunno. This is clearly madness, and I think most of what we're talking about can be described in blends of 'male' and 'female' without adding what are clearly sexual preferences into the mix. Intersex and transsex people clearly exist, but they're still defined by characteristics native to the base two.

There are enough real issues facing folks that coming up with all of this nonsense just seems to hurt the cause to me.

    • There is actually a person who has both sets of genitalia. They are called hermaphrodites. They have both the male penis and the woman's vagina and breasts. It is rare, but it does occur. I would consider this a third sex. There's a famous hermaphrodite in the news a few years back who claimed to be the first man to have a baby.

There are only two true genders. The root of the word gender is gene, it is a descriptor of what genes a person has. When a person has an X gene from their mother and an X gene from their father, they are female. If instead a Y is received from the father, they are male. Any variation other than that is not a gender, but rather a genetic disorder.

Now I have no issue with anybody expressing themselves how they wish but "gender" has a specific definition and it has nothing to do with expression.

I think there are more than two genders. This is because there are people who posses the two sex. Hence the question would be on how to categorise them. As one cannot term them as either man or woman.

I totally agree with you @Joel. Gender has its origins from genes. The only two genes that determines sex is the X and Y chromosomes. There has never been a case of A Q or W chromosome. In cases of hermaphrodites it's a genetic disorder and you always have one gene being more dominant than the other hence liking to a particular sex.

Gender and sex are intrinsically related but could be otherwise socially because you have people of a particular sex expressing themselves as the other but there should be no mistaking of sex.

Hermaphroditism is a medical disorder that happens when a foetus is forming. It is more of a physical problem as compared to being like say lesbian, gay or transgender which are considered mental states.

The fact that some hermaphrodites can have babies just proves that we only have two sexes.

Short answer: biologically, no. Socially, yes.

There are only two genders: men and women. However, due to society evolving and us humans wanting everyone to feel like they're accepted, we've created new genders, which is just a status. Such as transsexuality, which per definition is that you do not feel comfortable being your birth sex. In my opinion this is good, people can define themselves as whatever they want, and hopefully, nobody will judge.

Research actually shows that only 5% of everyone that are transsexual actually apply their transsexuality to their life. Meaning that they keep being their birth sex, even if they don't want to.

The etymology of gender does not come from the term gene, it comes from the term gendre (modern genre ), based on Latin genus ‘birth, family, nation.’ The earliest meanings were ‘kind, sort, genus’ and ‘type or class of noun, etc.’ (which was also a sense of Latin genus ). This would mean then, that gender is not linked with genes, so there is no basis for the claim that there can be only two genders because there are only two sex chromosomes.

There are essentially 2 genders for humans but then there are those people who aren't neither. People who are born with both genders or none. Then what you are is more or less up to your personality to decide. There are also people who are one gender in real life but in their heart and mind they are another one. It is not entirely clear about them either what they are in reality.

In my studies it was bought up that sex can actually be a spectrum. However, the study was performed on rodents so it is a model and can be related to humans but may not 100% correlated. They found that there was female 1 and female 2 and male 1 and male 2. If I remember the article correctly female 2 did not have the chromosomes XX chromosomes of the female 1 rodents and male 2 rodents did not have the XY chromosomes of the male 1 rodents. This could make way for research into humans sex too. I will endeavor to find the research that my professor provided us with.

Gender I believe is a social construct. Hence the term 'gender roles' created by society. But we all know that women can be perfectly capable of participating in male roles.

With all of what I have said you are entitled to your own opinion. If we all had the same opinion the world would become a very dull place indeed.

I believe there are more than 2 genders. To explain it I'm going to use an ice cream reference: chocolate, vanilla, and swirl. You would consider that 3 flavors, not 2. I think of it the same with genders; there are some many different ways to mix genders, and sexualities, that there can't possibly only be 2.

Sure, medically and physically, there can only be 2 genders-penis for male, vagina for women, but mentally you can be both genders, or neither gender, or a mix in between. You can't limit people to only '2 genders.'

I don't think you worded your question appropriately. Gender is a social construct; created to satisfy the needs of society by splitting essential roles into two categories. Since humanity has progressed far enough for gender roles to be unnecessary, since all essential roles can be carried out by both sexes, it does not matter how many genders there are. There can be two, or one hundred for all I care, since gender is nothing more than a preference. There are however, only two sexes, which are male and female; both of which are necessary in procreation.

I hate to disagree with an entire thread's worth of opinions, but, well... I disagree. Biological sex is not a simple binary, but even if it were, that wouldn't change the fact that gender is a spectrum.

Gender is a spectrum because there is so much that goes into making up gender that it can't be a simple yes/no dichotomy. Societal expectation, subjects of interest, appearance and presentation as well as a myriad of other factors make up what constitutes gender in society, so how could it possibly all balance out to an either/or?

Hi! So as a Psychology major I actually was forced to learn the psychology of sex and gender. So yes sex is merely what genitalia or chromosomes you born with and gender is based on the social construct. And to understand the "social construct" part, we have to look at other societies besides our own. In native cultures a third gender was known as "two spirit people". These individuals were thought to have more than one soul inside them, which lead for them to behave as both traditional genders instead of just one. They were highly regarded as healers and were treated with respect. On the other hand in India the "Hijra" are individuals who are intersex (more than one type of genitals), transgender, or nonbinary. They have been around for so long they can even be found in Indian mythology. They are treated poorly and are usually seen as ones who can give either blessings or curses (mostly due to superstition). So, in several cultures there is more than one gender. It's probably just the society some people live in where they don't usually see other genders so easily as the default setting of man and woman.
