Self fulfilling prophecies and psychology

I'm a sociology student and one of the most interesting things that I have learned is regarding the phenomena of self fulfilling prophecies.
This phenomenon occurs in all sectors of society, education, in the family, media, crime etc. It is basically when a human being is judged on the basis of certain characteristics of theirs' (whether these are merely perceived by the judge or actually true, depends) and this influences their self image so much that they start acting the way they are expected to e.g a student that is too loud is labelled a troublemaker on the first interaction by a teacher and they start treating them this way (directly + indirectly) which makes them believe that they are indeed, troublemakers and they start acting like it.

 

I believe that I have encountered some self-fulfilling prophecies in my lifetime. There are times that I dream of something then it will happen soon after. That's why it's hard not to feel afraid most of the times if I am having them. But most of the times, it's comes with the details form what's happening around me. For example, I told my office mates 1 year ago that one day, everyone will be working from home and it will happen soon. Then I resigned to that company to fulfill my own destiny. Little did I know that it will literally happen now.

COVID19 seem to fulfill that prophecy that I've made a year ago. I really want to just stay at home and even wish that all the people will just stay at home so that I don't have to deal with the crowd whenever I have to go out. Now it's happening, I truly believe that we all have to be careful what we wished for. I didn't know that this will be the reason why people will stay inside their homes. But hopefully, it will end soon so that other people can return back to normal. Never mind what I want. I just like them to be happier again.

 

COVID is honestly a mess, and super scary. And well, everyone hopes it ends. You are right, though. We have to be careful what we wish for. However, one thing that I've learnt is that: Life is random. What is going to happen will happen. You can't predict it and you certainly can't blame it on yourself
