Most of us know a person or two suffering from depression. As treatment, those people go to psychologists and take pills and the recovery time could take ages. Do you think such treatments are necessary ? Does it really make a difference?

I personally believe that depression is a state of mind that people put themselves in. Being more of a mental illness than anything, it is my unwavering credence that the only cure is to look at the world in a positive perspective. Just as we can drag ourselves into depression for trivial matters that we might not realize it to be trivial at the time, we can as well pull ourselves out of it. All we need is determination and a positive attitude towards life.

What do you think are ways to do so ? How do you bring positivity into your life? Do the type of friends you have make a difference? Can you cure yourself by yourself ?

I think your questions are difficult to answer with just one solution. I think that the type of treatment someone should get is very dependent on their own experiences and what they need. I think in some cases, the treatment will take a very long time, when people have to use pills, and then eventually ween off of them without getting dependent. I think that while depression could be a "state of mind" like you mentioned, it can also be scientifically present in one's brain.

Depression is an emerging disease now especially in teenagers. It is invisible until diagnosed in a person. This is why we have to be attentive to the feelings of our friends and family members because we don't know what they're really feeling. They might look happy but they really don't feel good inside.

I've known a lot of people who took their lives because of depression. Every time I hear someone I know die from this, I always feel sad because it could have been prevented with the right support from people around that person. That person must have been struggling for a long time and was scared to share it to somebody because of the stigma and consequences it can give.

I have depression myself, and I strongly believe in medicating it. Before I had the right medications, I could hardly make any progress in bettering my situation. I just didn't have the energy. I could hardly get out of bed, nevermind trying to get more exercise, eat better, etc.!

Depression definitely can be a state of mind, but I think it is more complicated than that in most cases. People need supports before they can turn things completely around.

Depression should not, under any circumstances, be taken lightly because it is a serious matter that has led to deaths many times. I agree with you because I also think that it is a state of mind, but I dont like to think of it as a mental illness. I don't think that just positivity is enough to cure depression. It also takes the endless support of all your friends and family to really show you that they are with you. Combine this with a positive attitude and it will work wonders. It all depends on your attitude, and the people around you. I think that is a solid way to work around depression.

I personally have been fighting with depression almost my entire life. I tried medication when I was a teenager, but didn't like the side effects, so I weaned myself off it in order to avoid withdrawal. I found coping mechanisms to get by, but there were still times when my brain chemistry would overwhelm all of it, and as a result, I came close to suicide way too many times.

Nowadays, I am using a combination of medication (which has come a long way in 20 years) and therapy, and I've never felt more on top it. I feel like I have control of my life again, and I'm not a slave to the whims of my body chemistry.

I have a couple different opinions on depression. First thing first. Depression is very real. It certainly can lead to suidcides and postpartum depression is even more real. Secondly, there are a lot of people who misuse the term and they try to get attention. Or sometimes they have some other mental health condition and they just blame it on depression. Third, the term depression is certainly way over used and it is not taken as seriously as it should be.
