I used to run quite a lot back in early high school. Each month we would have a group test to track our progress. To do this we would time how long it took us to run a mile.

The first time I did it in just under 12 minutes. Pretty bad.

I can't remember what my record was but it was somewhere around 9 minutes. Not great but it was definitely an improvement.

I still run every now and then but not as much as I used to.

Have you ever run a mile and timed yourself?

    What was your record?

When I was in elementary school, each year we had to do the President's Physical Fitness tests and part of that was running the mile. Boy, I hated it. I hate to admit it, but I was one of those girls who hated sports and would always end up walking as much of the 1 mile as possible. It wasn't until I got older and started "working out" that I actually started to enjoy cardio-type workouts. Running, though, is still pretty boring for me. I get in moods sometimes and will start training for a 5K. I'm short, so it takes me a lot more steps to run a mile than most people - I know, excuses, excuses, excuses. Anyway, when I'm in good shape, I can run a mile in about 10-12 minutes. My record for a 5K was 29 minutes.

I've never tried just running a mile as fast as I can. But now that you've brought it up, it sounds like a fun thing to train for. Give me a few weeks, and I'll let you know when I set my first record!

I run occasionally, but I don't time myself anymore. Before I had kids I would hit the treadmill 3 times a week. I would run three miles in about 25 minutes three times a week. I never really enjoyed doing it, but it kept me in shape. Now a days I just go for a hike, play at the playground or take a walk with my kids.

In grade school through high school I always had to run a timed mile a least once a year. I remember the first mile I ran took me something like 15 minutes - I was very out of shape as a kid. My personal best was about 7.5 minutes, which I ran my junior year of high school. Nowadays I don't really run, and I'm sure if I timed a mile I'd be pushing 10 minutes. I still try to stay active, mainly by hiking, but I'd like to get into running and get back to where I was in high school.

My best time in the mile was when I was in the military and I did it in 8.25 minutes and I was so proud of myself lol. I was in the best cardio shape of my life when I was in the military because of the constant running we did. I was an exercise beast back then! Nowadays not so much lol. I am now doing more weightlifting than anything but I still like to incorporate a little treadmill time.

My track days seem like a lifetime ago. I honestly don't remember what my best time was. I just remember wanting to be a sprinter like all of the cool kids but my track coach said he needed a good distant runner. I got suckered into it and I hated every minute of it. Though I was in excellent shape I steer clear of it now. I may hop on the treadmill for 5 minutes but that's enough for me. More power to all of you though!

Back in middle school, I ran a mile in about 7 minutes. Now I run 1 mile in 5 minutes and 45 seconds. I love running. I was, and still am, one of the fastest runners in my school. I don't have Physical Education anymore, because I am in a sport, but in middle school - back when Physical Education was not optional - we had to run 1 mile every week, on Thursday, or Friday.

Now, I say Thursday OR Friday because of an interesting system that my middle school implemented. We had 3 classes a day, not 6, like most schools. 3 classes on one day and then the other 3 classes the next day.

Most kids in my class did not like the mile, even though it was actually our shortest run. We usually ran 2 miles a day, although it would be divided into 3 intervals - most of the time. Occasionally, we would do what our school calls the "Bobcat Run". (Our school mascot was a bobcat) The Bobcat Run is just the 2 miles, but with no intervals - you had to run the whole thing without stopping.

I used to love running back in High School. I used it to supplement my cardio for wrestling. I wouldn't necessarily run exact miles but just do routes around where I lived. I loved it when I reached the point where my lungs no longer ached at all. I also took great pride when the team would go out on 5 mile runs around the neighborhoods and I was always the first person to get there around my weight class (140 and up). I can't remember timing myself but I recently started timing myself and I clock in at a pathetic average of 9:20. I will say that I run inconsistently, otherwise my time would be extremely better.

That is so awesome that you were able to run a mile in 12 minutes the first time. My first time was a bit different. It took me about 15 min to run a mile.
