Firstly, I want to list justifications for the death penalty.

    For
    • The death penalty is likely to prevent future murders. Most people don't want to lose their lives.
    • A just society requires the death penalty for the taking of a life. Life for a life?
    • The death penalty is administered as humanely as possible. Humanely?
Next, I want to list justifications against the death penalty.

    Against

    • Just as the death penalty is likely to prevent murders, can it also institute murders? Some people don't fear their lives being taken.
    • An unjust society does not require the death penalty for the taking of a life. An retribution of life isn't necessary.
    • The risk of executing an innocent person. You're never really sure, are you?
Lastly, do you think I am for or against the death penalty?

Do you think the death penalty should still be allowed? Explain.

I would only institute the death penalty in cases where the murderer has confessed and has undeniable evidence against him, and then refuses any rehabilitation. If the murderer wants to be rehabilitated and/or was convicted on weaker charges then they should be allowed to live.

Regardless of whether they get the death penalty or not they should be punished for taking the life of someone else.

I am against death penalty because just as you said, there is a risk of executing innocent people. There are a lot of countries who do not have a good justice system. This is not in favor of poor people who did not commit any crime but have no means to defend themselves. I believe that imprisonment is already enough because that will give them enough time to repent for the crimes that they committed.

Thou shall not kill. That is one of the 10 commandments.

    Live and let live.

Nobody has the right to take the life of another. I don't believe in death penalty. I don't believe that it will decrease the number of crimes. But I there is also a saying about an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

I am against killing. But if a person did something really heinous (murder), then I think that the person also deserves such a fate. But in order to implement the death penalty, the judicial system must be perfect so as not to cast a wrong verdict to a person that does not deserve to get the death penalty.

As you have done, I've weighed the pros and cons of this question and found myself disagreeing with the death penalty as punishment. While both lists present compelling reasons, the sticking point for me is the argument that it is a deterrent for crime, particularly heinous crimes. There have been studies done on this that show conclusively that it doesn't work as a sanction and, coupled with the risk of innocent people being wrongfully sentenced, I don't think it's worth it.

I don't think you're for it, as you've also highlighted two other important details. A life for a life isn't necessary and it's not necessarily humane. There are known cases of abuse in prisons right now, so I'm not sure it can be said with certainty that such abuses wouldn't extend into the administration of such a sentence.
