One may be tempted to asked, is there any one without the fear of snakes (Ophidiophobia or ophiophobia). Irrespective of the fact that many use snake as pets they still have that internal phobia within. I had watch many catch snakes, but their gesture shows some fear in their actions.

Others may seem to tame snakes through one means or the other, but can one say they don't have an iota of fear in them. A man once asked a question that can one sleep in a house with the reptile ( snake)? You may have an answer. Snakes are fearful animals. About 98 percent of people who come across snakes show that phobia in them.

Fearing snakes is a human instinct (I do not know what is wrong with the other 2%) because when our ancestors roamed the world, snakes were a huge threat to them and so, we have adopted that instinct.

The possible causes of ophidiophobia are genetic predisposition and having been the protagonist of a traumatic event that occurred in childhood, such as being bitten by a snake or witness of an attack on a family member.

Some researchers argue that fear of snakes can be explained by the evolutionary theory that Ophidiophobia is a natural fear, developed by our ancestors, to survive and inherited from today's man. This is the conclusion they came to after finding that 6-month-old babies show signs of stress in front of a snake photograph, even though they have never seen one.

Finally, others speculate that this fear originates from symbolism and popular culture since, in the collective imagination, the snake was seen by many as the symbol of evil, as the tempter par excellence.

I think many will have some sort of fear towards snakes,I myself would not want to spend too long with one in a house unless I knew it was safe around me.

My first time being around snakes was in Singapore zoo,one my friends worked at the zoo and so put two pythons on me and around my neck and I could feel their grip on me tighten slowly while someone took a photograph. My friend said they usually feed live chickens to them so they are well fed.

In Srilanka where my parents are from we get a lot of king cobra snakes up north of the island and one time our van ran over one that went on the road.My last visit I came across a palm leaf black spider which poisonous enough to paralyse someone for some hours at least and I saw it in a kitchen in the dark,so was very lucky to spot it in time.It was about 6 inches in diameter large.

Snakes can kill anytime so for me my fear of snakes would be in the range of 9-15 out of 15. Well it depends on the size and kind but I fear all of them. Keeping those as pets would be my nightmare forever. Snakes for other people only, I had a phobia on it.

snakes are mostly misinterpreted as killer machines due to our ancestral methodologies but i think we can become foolproof by increasing our awareness about snakes

I think that this is a really good point. Evolution has primed people to be wary of certain things and this is evident even in a small child who has never had an encounter with a real snake before. However, this doesn't explain why lots of people (myself included) aren't afraid of snakes. I actually find them quite charming and, while I wouldn't want one as a pet, I don't mind interacting with them. Evolution may have primed me to be scared of snakes, but I'm not.

Does anyone know an evolutionary reason why some people would be afraid of snakes and some people wouldn't?
