Of course, it's gonna harm your battery. Every battery has its life span. As time goes on batteries start wear out and the battery health goes down with time. If you charge it overnight then it will be like your speeding up the process.

If you charge it overnight then the batteries life span will wear out more quickly then usual. That's why you should ever charge your phone at night. Hope this helps you out.

I was told that you should charge it when it gets to 20% and only let the phone charge to 80%. I have also been told that every once in awhile you need to shut off the phone and restart if you notice that the phone is losing battery life quickly. I have noticed that if I charge my phone too often it temporarily will have a shorter battery life until I start charging it when it really needs it. Good luck with your phone.

You can charge your phone overnight if you are prepared to stay away and monitor the phone. What you shouldn't do is plug your phone to charge and leave home or go to sleep, whether it is daytime or nighttime. You are suppose to monitor your phone as it charges and make sure to disconnect it from the charger when it fulls.

Leaving the phone to keep charging for a long time after the battery is 100% full will definitely damage the battery. This is something you must avoid doing if you want your phone's battery to last, let alone make it a habit.

Most of us ran out of battery before bedtime, you've probably been there yourself. We casually resolve to let our phones charge overnight because we want to wake up to a 100% fully charged smartphone. You have probably heard that doing so damages the battery on the long run. What most people don't know is that things have changed regarding phone batteries.

Most of the phone batteries today consist of Lithium Ion (Li-ion) which wasn't the case years ago. Back then manufacturers used to make the batteries out of nickel which was not fit for smartphones. Since the beginning of the 21st century, most mobile manufacturers decided to transition to Li-ion batteries.

Luckily, Li-ion batteries do not have the problems its nickel counterpart had. Actually, Li-ion batteries revolutionalized how manufacturers designed and produced mobile devices. Lithium batteries can hold much more power than nickel based batteries while maintaining their compact size. This allowed the manufacturers to design better looking smartphones and highly effective too, as Lithium has a better lifespan than nickel. As our smartphones are smart, once our batteries are fully charged they disconnect the charger allowing the device to keep its full charge and also discharging the incoming current. So the answer is yes @Kim90, you can leave your smartphone charging overnight.

What your friend told you is true but with old batteries, not the new one, I searched a lot trying to figure out what is the best time to charge my phone and what is the best time to disconnect it from charging, and I ended up with a conclusion that the best thing to do is to charge your phone once the battery gets to 20%-25% and as to when to disconnect it from charge is as I said above it does not really matters for new batteries and for the old batteries it is recommended to disconnect them from charge at 90%-95%.

Kim90, according to me their is no problem charging your phone overnight.
The myth about overcharging your phone is a common one. The amount of charge going into your device shouldn't be an issue as most are smart enough to stop taking a charge once full, just topping up as needed to stay at 100 per cent.
The problems occur when the battery overheats, which can cause damage. To avoid this it's best to remove any case on your phone when charging over night. It’s also best to leave the phone on a flat, hard surface so the heat can dissipate easily.
So it's perfectly safe to charge your phone overnight, just make sure it doesn't suffer from overheating. That said you'll be surprised how quick phones can charge today, so you don't really need to leave it charging for 8 hours. One solution to slow down the charging is to use a wireless charger. It will save you fumbling to plug it in and mean you aren't using as much power to do so.

A lot of people have told me that overcharging isn't a thing anymore. As some people in this thread have mentioned as well, they say that our current batteries take care of themselves so that charging too much won't do damage to the battery.

Whether this is true or not, I've still found that charging my batteries too long does affect my electronic devices. Whether it's a laptop, a phone or anything else, the battery always seems to get ruined if I've charged it for too long and too many times. as Light mentioned above me however, it might be the case that this happens because the battery ends up overheating.

Either way, I always try to charge my devices until they're full and then unplug them. I only charge them overnight when I have no other choice.

I'm one of those people who believe that it does harm your phone's battery if you charge it overnight. I avoid charging my phone at night and a good way of doing this is to manage your phone usage... or just wake up earlier that your regular schedule so you can plug your phone for a charge.

Charging your smartphone really damages your battery. Probably not too much, but little by little. Your battery will eventually feel worn out if you keep on doing it. The battery of your smartphone has protection in it to prevent it from overcharging, but electricity still flows into your battery and that may cause damage. You can observe that your battery charges slowly when it reaches 80%. But I don't think that protection is enough to keep your battery from getting damaged.

Your friend does not know s**t.

Your Smart phone is a lot smarter than being able to play YouTube videos, when battery gets to 100% your phone does not let itself charge anymore so there is no risk of anything.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime. It got released in 2014 and we bought it instantly.

This phone used to be my fathers, but he got a better one and this one is main now.

Anyhow this phone is in my family for arround 4 years. (5 in 2019)

My father used it for business calls, but I am a teenager and you know Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, GAMES (a lot of them).

I always charge it overnight and my battery *besides 4 years of life, maxing out usage and CHARGING IT OVERNIGHT* lasts 4-5-6 days depending on usage.

So it is not a problem to charge it overnight.

I always charge my phone overnight because I have long days and I need to wake up with 100% charge. I think that it's fine and that based on the research there should be no problem doing so. Don't worry about it!

Smartphones just like laptops cut off power supply whenever the battery is fully charged. So it does not matter how long you leave your smartphone connected to power after the battery is charged. Therefore, there is no problem with leaving your smartphone on the charger overnight, unless it is not smart and this contradicts the meaning of the word "smartphone".

Honestly, I feel like I have learnt something new here.
I wasn't aware that you should monitor your phone charging? I tend to charge my phone overnight every single night, and I have not had any problems.
I really agree with Deann Kitty, as I feel the phone manufacturers could not provide us with phones that would so easily blow up?

I think it's okay to let your phone charge overnight, just don't sleep on night because it can overheat, it's not like it is going to explode under you but that can surely harm you battery, specially Li-Po batteries.
I charge my phone whenever I want, even when i'm using it a lot like watching videos or playing games, of course it doesn't have the same 3.000mAh it had when I bought it new but, considering how much i've totured him, he is going pretty well, i've downloaded a life battery tester app and it tells me that my battery has around 2.500mAh left, for a 2 year old phone i think that's pretty good.

I once owned an Infinix cellphone and used to charge it overnight since I did not have time during the day. When the battery condition worsened, I switched to a Tecno cellphone and swore never to use Infinix brand again. The second lasted only two months before I started having issues with the battery. So take it from me, overnight charging is not recommended.

I've been doing this for years without any noticable harm to my device or battery. It can also depend on what device you're using. I know thay some devices have programmed charging where it protects the battery from being overcharged.

The first thing to consider in this case is your battery. There are certain types of batteries that are not recommended to remain for long periods of time charging, and this should be respected.
The main problem in charging overnight is that it may overcharge, or damage the health of the battery

I can give you my experience, I think it's on the extreme end, but it's probably pretty accurate in general. I'm on Oneplus one and have left it on the charger overnight since the day I bought it 3 years ago. According to "Accu battery" health check my battery is at 80%. I think around 5-8% deterioration per year is what you should expect if you leave your phone charging every night.
