There have been countless times I am driving down the road when a particular song begins to play on the radio and within only a few seconds, my mind is somewhere else. Suddenly it’s several minutes later, the song is over, and I realize I have not been paying any attention to the road and instead had been lost in a specific day and time from my past or an exact moment that I associated the song with. How many of you can relate? What songs trigger the most significant & detailed memories for you?

I often think about certain memories or people when certain songs come on. Sometimes it makes my heart hurt, and other times it just makes me smile. I usually zone out when I'm like this, and I usually get too in my head. It's like when you were younger you'd put your head against a window and pretend you were in a movie.

"Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" from The Phantom of the Opera reminds me of my grandfather. The character who sings this song is trying to cope with her father's death, and the lyrics really hit home for me.

"Wishing you were somehow here again,
    Knowing we must say goodbye...

    No more memories,
    No more silent tears,
    No more gazing across
    The wasted years.
    Help me say goodbye."

    Good stuff.

Whenever I play a song I used to play a lot, it brings me back to the time I used to listen to it. Sometimes I play songs that I listened to from before quarantine to reminisce about the times we weren't locked inside the house. It brings back a rush of memories and reminds me of peoplee I used to be close with as well. I try not to play these songs too much as not to overwrite the memories associated with the songs.

Yes, very much so. Not just certain memories but certain periods in my life and certain people. It reminds me of who I was back then. There are songs that I try not to listen to anymore because I relate them to people who are no longer in my life or a very bad time.

People think I am crazy where I work because I literally will be groovin, and all of a sudden I'm in tears, or jumping with euphoria. Music has so many powerful memories and emotions that my emotional response is overwhelming.

Not only sad stuf though. 90's music for me really can stir up some of the best moments of my life.
