because Apple hasn't been keeping up with updating to the latest available hardware, but they're still generally selling at the same price points as they were years ago.

This question is a hard one because there is so much controversy over it. The main reason why they are so expensive is because of the value you are getting. When you purchase a Mac you are getting a premium computer. I think the most expensive part of the Mac is not the hardware itself, but the software. As of 2020, apple announced that they are converting all of their Mac computers to their own Apple silicon. This meaning they are going to their own processors. These new processors are much more responsive and seriously faster than apple competitors.

This reply is coming from a huge Apple nerd so I am a very bug supporter of Apple. But when you are looking for a computer you are looking for many different things such as size, portability, speed, and storage. In my opinion Apple checks all of those boxes. I hope this helped! If you are looking into a Mac I would highly suggest the MacBook Air, as it is one of their cheaper models and delivers considerable for the size and processor power.

The main reason why the Apple Macs are so expensive is because of the product you, as the consumer, are receiving. Secondly, we have to factor in supply and demand. To be more specific, if suddenly Apples become the new popular trend, and everybody wants one, the price will fluctuate, and the product's cost will soar.

Most people know that Apple MacBook’s are more expensive than many of the Windows options, and a lot of Windows laptops pack better performance specs while being cheaper.
Most people who have used a MacBook trackpad, would agree that Apple’s force-touch trackpads are by far the best you can get. They don’t actually move or click, they use a pane of glass with sensors underneath, that sense pressure from your finger. These awesome trackpads cost much more than the plastic ones with springs in other laptops.
Apple focuses on privacy, making everything on your MacBook as secure as possible, and they never sell any of your data like some other companies do.
I hope now you know why Apple products are more expensive than other cheaper and nice looking options available out there.

Cost to make them + Apple's margin = Price

Overall the margin is going up and down all the time. It's "just" 21% now. It looked much better 5 years ago: https://ycharts.com/companies/AAPL/profit_margin
This is not the full story though, since that number is after all costs like R&D, and the margin for different products are different. For some they accept lower margins, like iPhone 5C or SE, or recent iPhones that cost more to make compared to a few years ago. For some they're higher. like newly released MacBooks or accessories.

That's always been the case for Macs/MacBooks. A new release goes up, then goes down with subsequent upgrades of internals. The original Unibody MBP cost $1999–$2799 in 2008, the 15" Retina MBP cost $2199–$3049 in 2012, now the first gen 15" Touch Bar MBP is $2399–$2999.

Firstly, Mac is used specifically for heavy editing works and they work quite efficiently.
Secondly, they are symbol of standard these days, usual the Apple product.

The Mac and really any Apple products are primarily expensive because they can be. The business has built a cult following of sorts much like Starbucks or Nike which allows them to increase prices over competitors regardless of whether or not they are a better product. Many times in my opinion, they are not. They also become something or a status symbol and again, this allows them to hike prices and somehow people will still jump at getting the newest item.
