Computers are classified in different ways, based on some parameters

    Physical size and processing power
Based on this characteristic, computers are classified into super computers, main frames , micro computers and mini computers. Here, it means that, super computers are the largest in terms of physical size, and also the most excellent in terms of the ability to process date. Micro computers, on the other hand, are the smallest in terms of physical size, and the least in terms of processing power. Micro computers can also be further classified into desk top computers, lap tops, palm tops and PDAs.

    Functionality
In terms of functionality, computers are classified into analogue and digital computers. Analogue computers use the continuous variation aspect of physical phenomena, while digital computers solve problems by processing information in discrete form.

    Purpose
Computers can be classified in terms of purpose as either special purpose, or general purpose machines. Special purpose computers are designed to carry out specific roles, for example, science and research, while general purpose, are used to carry out many functions.
