The movie Se7en is about two detectives (Mills and Somerset) trying to undercover a serial murder case where the victims are brutally killed. Each victim corresponds to the seven deadly sins. By killing them the serial killer (John Doe) thinks that he is punishing them because he believes that they need punishing because of the deadly sins that they committed.

He thinks that these people should be punished for what they did to this world. The murderer is trying to send a message to the detectives and to the society that “We see a deadly sin on every street corner and every home and we tolerate it. We tolerate it because it’s common. It’s trivial. We tolerate it morning noon and night”. The people in the society are being apathetic towards committing a deadly sin and are just casual about it, only taking interest in grave/mortal sins like murder, adultery, rape, suicide and others. This raises the question, who is truly evil? The serial killer, where he kills those who commit evil, specifically the seven deadly sins? Or the two detectives, where they only imprison those who have done mortal sins like killing and murder than those committing the deadly sins which the society sees every day in their lives and just tolerating it?
