What keeps you on (or off) social media?

I've deactivated almost all of my social media accounts over the last 3 years. I've lost real life friendships over my decision not to be online, they say they can't keep in touch and it's too hard without social media. But are we not in the very beginning of social media? How is it so hard for today's society to function without social media?
As a note, I do notice certain things I miss without social media. The marketplace/buying and selling component is something I haven't found a replacement for. If I need recommendations or suggestions for something, I can't rely on the community on my phone. But why is it that people feel I'm obligated to show off my home, my pets, my kids, my self? I don't need the outside validation that my life is good, and I certainly don't need outside sources telling me how I should live/better my life, when they bass their opinions on glimpses into my reality. So what is it for you that keeps you on or off social media?

I spend most of the time on social media more than six hours a day. This because I earn from some of this platform. When I'm off definitely I am on other errands

I've always been active on specific social media but I really only use it for communication. I completely agree when you say that putting everything about your life online isn't a good idea and hourly posts or status updates are just unnecessary. However, some social media, like Facebook, are mainly information about local events and are a good way to see and hook-up with your friends or relatives. So in my opinion, the fact that most people that you know are on social media keeps me on social media. As far as people being unable to function without social media, I find that ridiculous. Although I use social media daily, if someone were to walk up to me tomorrow and force me to stop, I really wouldn't mind. People that need to have social media to function will probably develop, or already have developed, an addiction and will suffer from it in the future.

Generally, communication is the biggest thing with social media. I've been very inactive on mine simply because the world is a bunch of stupid people most of the time. It's frustrating to watch the chaos and realize you have little power to stop it. You're required to follow trends or be lost in obscurity as well, which makes it even worse.

I always found nature as a way out of social media and everything online. Nature has something in it that always makes you feel better. And what keeps me on social media is the people that make me laugh and make me feel better. Those people are sometimes making my day better, we're talking about people like David Dobrik, Jason Nash

I spend almost all of my free time on social media, it really just makes me feel good. I spend a lot of time on Netflix, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. Honestly, the internet is so entertaining, there's no reason I should stay off. I can keep up with all my favourite people whenever I want and I have all the knowledge in the world. With all the stuff going on right now with COVID-19, it's the only way I can communicate with my friends.

I spend a lot of time online because I earn money through different platforms and it is also because I have family in different countries, which forces me to always be in contact through social media
