Considering the United States is one of the most tech advanced countries in the world we have not been ranked in the global top 10 education systems for quite some time. According to the Pearson global report on education the United States global rank was 14th in 2014.

Why do you think the U.S. is having such a difficult time competing in education with South Korea,, Japan, Hong Kong, etc.?

In my opinion United States is the best place in the earth and has the best education in the world for many reasons. Why do you think many young people from abroad dream to study , work and even in the United States? Try to find why.

I think a lot of it has to do with culture. In the US, for a long time, it was "bad" to do well in school. Yes, you wanted to pass and get okay grades, but education wasn't a high priority for most people. Only recently has schooling actually become necessary. Even so, athletes are still often praised over actual scholastic learning. If you go overseas, especially to those Asian places you mention, there is a much higher cultural emphasis put on book learning and doing well in school.

We have a difficult time competing because we are not focused on educating our population properly. Part of the reason for that is our dysfunctional political system. Too many leaders are bogged-down in political ideology and trying to be right, they aren't trying to solve the problem. Additionally, for whatever reason, being smart is looked-down upon in American culture.
