Is polygamy allowed by Christian faith?

Can a Christian marry more than one wife?

 

Christian do not allow polygamy because they believe in the beginning God created one man and created one woman out of his ribs.
In Genesis the bible says that a man Will leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife and shall become one flesh.

 

Actually, the concept of "one flesh" doesn't imply exclusivity. 1 Corinthians 6:16 states that a man who unites himself with a prostitute also becomes one with her in body. So clearly becoming "one flesh" is not exclusive to a man and his wife. Not to mention that several figures in the Old Testament had multiple wives, including Moses (credited as the author of Genesis), so there's no way God would have favored them if they were violating His design for marriage.

To answer the OP, the Bible itself never explicitly condemns polygamy. The Romans did, however, and the Church later on incorporated and enforced their views on marriage. So no, Christianity doesn't allow polygamy, but that's because of Roman influence, not the Bible.

 

The problem of these modern days is that Christians no longer read the bible. That is why so many of them accept things that have been forbidden in the Bible by God. The bible States very clearly that one man should marry one woman. So polygamy is not allowed. People have fallen so far from the real faith and that is why there is a lot of polygamy in the society.

 

I think there is no where in the bible a verse is quoting the number of wife's a man should marry. With the current population women are more than men. So bearing with the situation men should be entitled to marry more than two wifes.
