In May 1949,“Mental Health Awareness Month” was established in the United States to bring awareness and health care to individuals living with mental health illnesses. Additionally, in that same year, the “National Mental Health Act,” was passed and the National Institute of Mental Health was established.

As of Nov. 16, 2006, “Mental Health America” has been working to assist in the education, research and treatment of mental health issues. It was founded on February 19, 1909, and has been known as “National Committee for Mental Hygiene” and “National Mental Health Association”.

March 2019, will acknowledge 70 years of recognizing “Mental Health Month” in the US. Each year hosts a different theme to engage and educate not only people living with mental health illness, but also, mental health professionals, family, and society as a whole.
